I had a feeling the Hard drive and the E Machines disk weren't compatible, That disk would only work on the original Machine any way. As far as the dodgy CD ROM stopping everything, it would most likely be some sort of electrical short in it, causing the power supply to drop out or at least reduce the voltage to be too low.
