bigjollyal Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 hi there, our problem is our connection is being hacked by one of our kindly neighbours and i'm seriously fed up with it. i've searched other forums and have received some advice on how to encrypt our connection ,the problem is that it works, but only sort of; it doesnt show up as being secure , and more importantly we get a message saying we have "limited connectivity " and cannot access the net.the only remedy seems to be to turn the security off . please please please help before i go completely mad!! it would really help if you could try to explain things in words of one syllable as i am only barely computer literate. many thanks p.s. we are using windows xp home edition, tesco is our isp and the wireless router is a philipps 6500. pinknfluffy1985 Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 I used to have this constantly only I wish I knew then what I knew now. It would have saved me getting a new router. Ok you are going to have to go into the router setup and look for security there. Most if not all routers have there own security however half the time they leave then unlocked for your convenience. They tend to have security in there somewhere. Philips Global Go to this site and type in the product and model you have then either download the users manual which might have the know how of how you set up your security or go to help and support and ask them yourself. I'm afraid I can't offer more then that as I haven't used that make before. I'm a netgear user (and before that a Belkin). The Philips site is a start. They will know better then anyone how to get your security up and running. pinknfluffy1985 X Quote
Tootech Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 Just had a look through the manual for your router and it all seems standard setup so first, we need a bit more info from you.... What encryption have you tried ? I wouldn't bother with WEP for the moment, WPA is your best option. Your profile says you are using Windows XP, just to make sure - is that the machine you are trying to connect? It's worthwhile looking in the wireless network settings on your computer and removing any connection information already saved. To do that, go to View Wireless Networks>Change Advanced Settings.....middle tab.....Wireless Networks. Look at the Preferred Network list - if your router is listed there, delete any connections to it. Login to your router 192.168.2.1 I believe - making sure you are connected to your router with an ethernet cable, navigate over to the wireless security settings. You'll be set as an open system at the moment - change that to WPA security. Add a passphrase - needs to be 8 characters or more. Your wireless connection will drop out in a few seconds. It would be wise at this point to save your router settings and reboot it. At the same time reboot your computer. When all is settled and back on, go to view your wireless networks - can you see it as a secured network now? I have come across some routers that just won't work properly with WPA encryption, and have had to go back to using WEP - just a thought. Also, there is another way to prevent access - even to an open system Should it come to it, you can use MAC filtering to deny access to anyone except your own computers. Let us know how you get on Quote
Spools Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Another thing I'd suggest is at the same time you establish your encryption, rename your SSID broadcast signal. Once you've successfully connected your wireless devices to the router, go back into the router settings and turn off the SSID broadcast. Quote
