Guest ChuckN Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 We have a Windows 2003 Server Enterprise server that does everything for us, including DC, Exchange Server, File Server, Web Server, DHCP, etc. We just replaced the hardware with a new Dual 2000 Mhz Quad Xeon Processors with 4GB RAM. The operating system is set to optimize background services and system cache. I also have 3 Raid 5 drives and 1 Mirrored Drive with at least 2 GB each setup as virtual disks that are managed by the operating system. I have had several occasions (once every few days) where I am moving between applications and all of a sudden the server "freezes", sometimes for more than a minute, before releasing and allowing me to navigate freely. Most of the time, the workstations see no degradation of server performance when this happens. This morning I opening Event Viewer and moved from the Application Log to the Security Log, neither one of which was very large, and the explorer interface locked up for about a minute. I forced the application closed and reopened Event Viewer . It acted as if nothing happened. I received two Application Hang Error messages in the Application Log, but everything else worked normally. At the time very little else was happening. No backups, etc. were in progress. I am using Perfect Disk 8.0 and suspect it does not manage memory as well as I would like it to. I have more of these problems when it is running than most other times. The other idea is our Panda Virus Protection Software is doing something. The server is otherwise running great. No unexpected error messages and everything is running smoothly. Sorry for all of the background. Any ideas?

Guest Thee Chicago Wolf Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 Re: Memory Management Problem >Sorry - Yes. We set up the server with SP2 from the beginning. Ok, got it. There have been a couple KB advisories post SP2 you might want to check out. This is a good jumping off point for starters: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944011 I've seen some KB articles citing memory leaks and other oddities but not so much freezing. Freezing could be indicative of disk access tripping up a bit. Is this a SCSI array or SATA? Was it happening before SP2 or is this a first-time setup of this server? - Thee Chicago Wolf
Guest ChuckN Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 Re: Memory Management Problem Thanks Thee The server was installed with SP2 from the beginning. All of the arrays are SATA. Usually you can hear when you have a bad drive. So far, the drive performance appears to be smooth without any unusual sounds. Also, I think it would be unusual for a disk hang to last 60 seconds, and then continue as if nothing happened. I executed the Netsh int ip set chimney DISABLED command. The description seems to make sense. I will let you know if I continue to have the problem. So far so good. Thanks a lot for your help!!
