how to bypass password?

hi guys,

 

controversial subject header i know lol, but basically a friend of mine has forgotten his password on his pc, he has majority of his uni work and projects on the hdd and really needs to get into it without having to reformat,

 

does anyone know an alternative to get into it and save his work or is a format the only cure?
