Printer Driver being reset at login

Recommended Posts

Windows 2003 Sp2 / clients - windows xp

Every time I log in (with different accounts) the driver for a remote

printer gets reset. How do I change this. I checked the Group Policy and the

settings are "not configured" I waited 60 seconds after login to make a

change on the printer settings as per MS instructions and waited 60 seconds

for that change to be saved to the client. How do I get the driver I want to

stick when the users log in

Thanks,

Re: Printer Driver being reset at login

Besides witing for 60 seconds after making a change to the Device

settings of the printer, did you also make a change in some of the

other properties?

243942 - Terminal Services printer redirection not signaled on

change to server-side Device Settings tab in Windows 2000 or

Windows Server 2003

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=243942

Note that the modified settings are cached on the *client*, so if

you log on from another client, you'll not get the modified

settings.

Re: Printer Driver being reset at login

Well it is client specific since different drivers will work on different

printers. I just need to know how to fix it on one client. I made additional

changes on the printer properties as per MS and it still did not work. always

defaulting to another driver.

I tried making the change logging in with administrator and still it did not

work.

Re: Printer Driver being reset at login

Hello,

Based on your current situation, I suggest you first check the permission

of the user who logon to see if the user have proper permission to change

printer properties of the printer.

In addition, also please check the following registry key to see if the

user has full control permission:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print

Re: Printer Driver being reset at login

It is not a permission issue - as i mentioned before I logged in with the

domain admin account and had the same problem. Can you please provide steps

to fix this instead of shooting one suggestion at a time.

Thanks,

Re: Printer Driver being reset at login

After reviewing your post, I notice you said "I made additional changes on

the printer properties as per MS and it still did not work. always

defaulting to another driver." What is the exact symptom? Do you mean the

default printer always use another driver? How do you know the printer is

using another driver? What is another driver? Is it a local printer driver?

To narrow down the issue, if you have installed multiple other printers on

the client, I suggest you temporarily remove all other printer drivers and

monitor the issue again.

Thanks & Regards,

Re: Printer Driver being reset at login - PLEASE HELP

Re: Printer Driver being reset at login - PLEASE HELP

The exact issue is the subject "Printer Driver being reset at login" I log in

to a TS from an remote Xp client. the xp client has a hp colorjet. The

printer is installed on the TS. The TS uses "Deskjet 895cxi" driver when it

installs the remote printer. This driver does not work with this printer. I

change it to "Laserjet 550" driver. This driver works.

The next time I reconnect the driver for this printer is set to "Deskjet

895cxi".

There are no other printers installed on the client. The client local

printer does not use "Deskjet 895cxi"

So once again. HOW DO I FIX THIS> Can someone please help! Going on a week

now and I have not gotten any valuable troublshooting information. This is

getting frustrating. What is controlling the Driver default the server? the

client? isolate that for me. Now, what can I reset clear..... to make the

change I want and let it stick.

THank you

Re: Printer Driver being reset at login - PLEASE HELP

Aaah, but now you post a detailed description of the sequence of

events, and that makes a difference!

I could be wrong, but to me it sounds as if the substitute driver

is defined in a custom ntprintsubs.inf file (or whatever the file

is called on your system).

Check KB article 239088, which explains how you can configure the

server to use a specific driver (in your case the "Deskjet 895cxi"

driver) as a substitute when the real driver (for the HP Colorjet)

isn't available. Once you've located the custom .inf file, modify

it and changed the substitute driver to "Laserjet 550". Make sure

that you get the spelling right, it's case sensitive.

239088 - Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services

server logs events 1111, 1105, and 1106

Re: Printer Driver being reset at login - PLEASE HELP

Re: Printer Driver being reset at login - PLEASE HELP

Hello,

From your detailed description of this issue, this seems to be odd issue.

At this moment, I suggest you try to clean the printer subsystem completely

to monitor the issue again:

WARNING

=========

a) Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may

require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee

that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be

solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and

Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete

Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in

Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.

b) Using this method will remove all of the printer drivers installed on

the system. You need to reinstall the printer drive in order for the

printer to work.

1. Log into the system as an administrator, click Start >> Run, input

regedit and click OK to run regedit.exe.

2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print,

click Registry->Export Registry File on the menu, and export the current

key to a REG file for backup. (Note: You may double click on the REG file

in Windows Explorer to restore the original settings)

3. Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environment\Window

s NT x86\Drivers, remove both the Version-2 and Version-3 keys.

4. Remove all sub keys under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers. (DO NOT

REMOVE THE PRINTERS KEY.)

5. Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environment\Window

s NT x86\PrintProcessors, delete any processor that is not the following:

winprint

6. Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Providers, delete

any provider that is not one of the following:

Internet Print Provider

LanMan Print Services

7. Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors, delete

any monitor that is not one of the following:

BJ Language Monitor

Local Port

PJL Language Monitor

Standard TCP/IP Port

USB Monitor

Windows NT Fax Monitor

AppleTalk Printing Devices

LPR Port

8. Exit the registry editor.

9. Remove all files from the following directories:

C:\WINNT\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\2

C:\WINNT\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3

10. Reboot and install the printer driver, and then test the issue again.

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao

| Hello,

|

| From your detailed description of this issue, this seems to be odd issue.

| At this moment, I suggest you try to clean the printer subsystem

completely

| to monitor the issue again:

|

| WARNING

| =========

| a) Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may

| require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot

guarantee

| that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be

| solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

|

| For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys

and

| Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and

Delete

| Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in

| Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit

it.

|

| b) Using this method will remove all of the printer drivers installed on

| the system. You need to reinstall the printer drive in order for the

| printer to work.

|

| 1. Log into the system as an administrator, click Start >> Run, input

| regedit and click OK to run regedit.exe.

|

| 2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print,

| click Registry->Export Registry File on the menu, and export the current

| key to a REG file for backup. (Note: You may double click on the REG file

| in Windows Explorer to restore the original settings)

|

| 3. Navigate to

|

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environment\Window

| s NT x86\Drivers, remove both the Version-2 and Version-3 keys.

|

| 4. Remove all sub keys under

| HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers. (DO

NOT

| REMOVE THE PRINTERS KEY.)

|

| 5. Navigate to

|

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environment\Window

| s NT x86\PrintProcessors, delete any processor that is not the following:

|

| winprint

|

| 6. Navigate to

| HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Providers,

delete

| any provider that is not one of the following:

|

| Internet Print Provider

| LanMan Print Services

|

| 7. Navigate to

| HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors,

delete

| any monitor that is not one of the following:

|

| BJ Language Monitor

| Local Port

| PJL Language Monitor

| Standard TCP/IP Port

| USB Monitor

| Windows NT Fax Monitor

| AppleTalk Printing Devices

| LPR Port

|

| 8. Exit the registry editor.

|

| 9. Remove all files from the following directories:

| C:\WINNT\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\2

| C:\WINNT\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3

|

| 10. Reboot and install the printer driver, and then test the issue again.

|

| Thanks & Regards,

|

| Ken Zhao

| | The exact issue is the subject "Printer Driver being reset at login" I

| | to a TS from an remote Xp client. the xp client has a hp colorjet. The

| | printer is installed on the TS. The TS uses "Deskjet 895cxi" driver

when

| it

| | installs the remote printer. This driver does not work with this

printer.

| I

| | change it to "Laserjet 550" driver. This driver works.

| |

| | The next time I reconnect the driver for this printer is set to

"Deskjet

| | 895cxi".

| |

| | There are no other printers installed on the client. The client local

| | printer does not use "Deskjet 895cxi"

| |

| | So once again. HOW DO I FIX THIS> Can someone please help! Going on a

| week

| | now and I have not gotten any valuable troublshooting information. This

| is

| | getting frustrating. What is controlling the Driver default the server?

| the

| | client? isolate that for me. Now, what can I reset clear..... to make

the

| | change I want and let it stick.

| |

| | THank you
