MSCONFIG Question.

Hi Guys,Under Services a number of services have stopped after them.

How am I to know what should be stopped and not? Thanks.

This PC is still behaving like a Pig,and trying to suss out.:)

Sometimes it is a question of just looking them up on google and seeing what they are. Most likely if they relate to something you have downloaded or installed you will be the best judge as to whether you ever use the program that is related to the service. You should probably hide the microsoft services when you do. Even then, some of those are not needed either.

 

Just remember to set a restore point in case things get messed up.

Thanks beeceebee.Many of the ones that are stopped, are Microsoft ones.

Just wasn't sure what Microsoft ones, should or should not, be stopped.

This is under Services,not startup.:)

I understand but everything you do is reversible as long as it is not something required to boot and, frankly, I am not sure that any of them are. But I would not go by that.

That is unusual Dougie, I have Avira and did a restore the other day and have had no problem. At this point you are only creating a restore point but, still, that should not be happening unless you restore to a point before you installed Avira.

I honestly don't know what to do.

3 times I have selected System Restore 24 hrs previous and a popup comes up to say My Antivirus is not on this PC,or words to that effect.

Avira I have had for ages,so this is odd.Have to reinstall each time.

 

I try and uninstall uniblue drive scanner and cant start the PC.

Have to go into safe mode and selelect last good known config.Have to use system restore and put back Uniblue driver scanner.

 

One minute my second drive is listed in My Computer and Disc Defrag.

Next minute it is no where to be found till I do a reboot.

 

Do you guys think I should take the PC back and get Windows reinstalled for the 4th time in 3 mths.?

I am paranoid about looking after this Computer maintainance and Security wise,and I seldom download new programs anymore,so at a loss to know why almost daily I have a new issue.

As I said strange, I do notice with Avira that the umbrella icon is sometimes showing as being closed on startup indicating that the guard feature is stopped. It shows in the main avira window as running. I usually resolve this by disabling and then turning it back on.

 

I don't know much about Uniblue scanner except that it is reviewed and seems genuine but of little value to you. The fact that it cannot be uninstalled is worrisome though.

 

I would wait for more technical advice than I am able to give on the subject.

After system restore,I go into windows Security centre, and the AntiVirus is turned off.No way I can turn it on again,except uninstall and reinstall.ODD.

The umbrella opens up each time during start up.No prob,normally.

Dougie between that and the uniblue issue it really does seem like there is something competing with you as to who (or what ) is running your computer. A format and install (particularly if you pay for it) seems a bit drastic. I would really do a good disinfection before I go the reinstall route.

I agree - most MS services should run all the time.

Just to add to the confusion.....

 

There is a difference between a stopped and a disabled service.

 

Some services are disabled, and will not run - e.g ClipBook, Network DDE on my machine.

 

Some are manual and will run when needed e.g Windows Installer, Logical Disk Manager.

 

And some are automatic - I guess if the the auto ones are not starting then thats the time to worry.

 

System Restore can get confused at times - it's not the holy grail of fixes it would like to be, and running it 3 times in 24 hours is a bit worrying.

 

I am wondering why you would need to do that, and if there is something not quite right in the background

Sorry,what I meant was,I have used System restore on 3 occassions lately,and never gone back more than 24hrs(1day) previous.

Not 3 times in the last 24hrs.

 

In System Config Utility,under Services,your saying leave all the boxes ticked,and take no notice of the running or stopped status.

There are 30 MS Services right now, that show stopped.Is this normal,I wonder.All the boxes are ticked.

 

I have done full scans with MalwareBytes and SAS just then and found nothing.

Something isn't quite right somewhere.

I uninstalled Uniblue again, and this time my quick launch, in the task bar vanished completely,immediately.

Unlocked Task Bar, and found something has unchecked quick launch.

When I try and check the quick launch box,I get this message.:confused:

Uniblue appaears to be a driver scanner, am I correct?

 

In Which case, although trusted as BeeCeeBee said it appears, we would not recommend using 3rd party programs to check your drivers.

 

It seems that your PC might be in a bit of a sicky situation, I'll have a look now to see if I can find any answers or solutions for you, and hopefully others can too :)

Okay, first things first, let's get your quick launch back.

 

- Click on Start

- Then click on Run

- Type in "IE4UINIT.EXE" without the quotes and press enter

 

Nw try to enable your quick launch again, does it work?

Yes Dirty Polo, Uniblue Driver Scanner. Learnt since, it's not necessary.

I C/P the Text, without Quotes, and no different.

Should I do a System Restore,and get Uniblue back, and see if the Quick Launch returns,I wonder. Thanks.

No, I wouldn't do that, as we want that program off your PC :P

and chances are it will cause more problems when you uninstall it next time.

 

Seeing as that didn't work, can you click Start, then Run and type in the following without quotes and press enter:

 

"%Appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\"

 

There should be a folder called "Quick Launch"

 

Can you confirm this?

Okay,

 

In that window, please click on "Make a new folder"

 

And name it "Quick Launch"

 

Now try to enable quick launch again, if it still wont work, try rebooting your PC and trying again. Upon failure again, browse back to this location and check that the folder you made is still there.

Absolutely brilliant,Dirty Polo.

The Quick Launch Folder stayed there. The Check stayed, without a Popup.

I put all my Icons, back in Quick Launch,and locked the Task Bar.

I checked Program files, and only an empty Uniblue Folder,so I deleted.

I checked Defrag,and both Hard Drives are showing, and the centre roll wheel on the mouse, is working again.Couldn't be happier.

Hi Guys.All going great.Just one thing, is puzzling me.How do I get the Outlook Express Icon, on the DeskTop, Please.Not like normal program,r/c and send to.

If you have the Outlook Express shortcut in your start menu you can just "drag" it to the desktop.

Alternatively, find the icon in programs, right click on it and select create shortcut, then drag the new one to the desktop if it hasn't put it there already.

I remember dragging icons with the mouse previous,but since this uniblue saga,things just don't perform normally.

I tried dragging the outlook Express Icon from the start Menu,Nothing.In fact none of the programs will drag.

I went into all Programs,R/C on the Outlook Express Icon,a quick flash,then nothing.Wont drag any Icon.

It would have been handy to eventually drag it into Quick Start,where I had it before,but looks like I have to put up with the slight inconvenience.

All Icon dragging with the mouse is dead.

EDIT.Dragging from desktop to quickstart still works.
