Guest bitbt Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 We are having a problem where PST files are getting locked and users can not connect to them. There are two exact issues that do not seem to relate to each other. 1) Old sessions are not disconnecting after a specific idle time. Users are staying connected for days and weeks and while they may get disconnected their sessions are not closing out correctly and it locks their pst files. We delete the old session and they work just fine. 2) User's PST files are getting locked and are not avalible. We have try and touch the file in some way multiple times. I attempt to copy a pst file 1 to 20 times it might fail once and then let me copy or may fail 20 times and then let me copy. it is a hit or miss thing. We have been trying to resolve this issue and have done everything from replacing all the hardware, to turning off the TOE nic options, to replacing the NIC's completely. It only seems to be their PST files. We are running Windows 2003 Server Enterprise on Dell PE2950's with 8Gig's of RAM. I can give you more specific information if needed.
Guest Meinolf Weber Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 Re: PST File Locks Hello bitbt, Are the files on a share or local stored: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=297019 Also, how big are the files, the bigger the easier they will make problems. And they can't be bigger then 2 GB. After this maximum size is reached, Outlook does not permit the size of the file to grow beyond this size. Note that PST files must reside on the users' hard drives, not a network drive. MS doesn't support accessing PST files across a LAN or WAN connection - it will cause problems with performance, and likely data corruption eventually. I'd suggest Exchange server (and no PST files), but if you can't swing that, set up a logoff script for each user that copies their PST file to their private folder on the network, so you can have a backup.
