jlay Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I've tried repeatedly ( about 6 times ) to instal software for a new dvd video game. Each time it stalls / freezes & will go no further towards completing the installation. Beforehand I disconnect internet, firewall , anti-virus & shut down all non-essential programmes. I'm no expert but could this be due to a faulty device or a run-down battery somewhere inside the box which needs to be renewed ? I've also run a defrag & checked for errors in safe-mode & all appears to be normal ! ! Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 What game is it? How long have you waited as some can take 5 minutes + Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
jlay Posted March 11, 2009 Author Posted March 11, 2009 Software not installing It's called 'Over Flanders Fields Phase 3' ; it should take about 20-30 mins to instal & is 1.70Mbs. Its from OBD software Quote
Plastic Nev Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 If the game is on a brand new disk, if possible try it on another machine, if it still won't install, take it back to the shop as it could be a faulty disk. It does happen. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. If Free PC Help has helped you then please consider a donation. Match Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Hi jlay Can you tell us what CPU you have? If you have 20Gb of HDD space? How much RAM you have in your Machine? What GPU Card you have? and you are aware that this game is an add on to Microsofts CFC3 so you will have to have that installed first Quote
jlay Posted March 12, 2009 Author Posted March 12, 2009 Software wont instal Thanks Match , here's the detail: CPU :IntelCore 2Quad Pro Q6600 ( 2.40 Ghz) RAM : 2GB Corsair TwinX HD space :capacity is 149Gb , free space is 45.9 Gb Graphics Card : Nvidia GForce Ultra 8800 ( 768 Mb ) DVDvideo game size is 1.7 Mbs I have the Micrsosoft CFS3.1 version already installed as certain coding is needed from this to run 'Over Flanders Fields' also , this is the SECOND dvd that they ( OBD software) have supplied me with , free of charge, because the first one misbehaved itself in the same way. This leads me to think there's a faulty device or flat battery somewhere in the system , I don't know because I'm no expert in these matters. Quote
Match Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Thing is if it was a problem with your PC then it would be all the software that you install, and as you say you have CFS3.1 installed already that sort of says that this is a problem specific to this game. have you tried emailing them with your problem (Link) towards the bottom of the page. and to be totally honest I'm a little stuck for suggestions. yes their is a battery on your motherboard, but if it was running low you should get a warning and your time and date would keep resetting, along with your bios. If it were your GPU or CPU then the problem would show else were as well. and similarly if it were your hard drive, Mobo or Ram. So that leaves the possibility that something somewhere that you have installed (or not installed) has changed something in XP that's stopping it. or you have another faulty disk, or you've missed something that's happening while your installing. but as for now my best suggestion is for me to get Dalo or Tooteck to have alook at this thread and tell you what they think. as they know a lot more than me. Dalo Harkin Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 Well there is no issue with the system spec. So you put the game in - do you try and load it from the splash screen that comes up or do you explore the disk and run the setup.exe? If you are using the splash then I would try the disk method - also check that when you are running it, you are logged in as an Admin Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
jlay Posted March 14, 2009 Author Posted March 14, 2009 Software not installing I just follow the instructions on back of dvd : ''Insert dvd , browse it using windows explorer ; then I use the set-up exe icon ; then there is the option of using the CFS3 disc to get the CAB files , this is the one I use , or checking the box for the other option : using the installed system ; I've tried both. How do I check if I am the administrator ? I thought that as I'm the only person using it (it's a home pc )that I would be the administrator automatically or does MS have some quirky rule ? Last attempt reached about 95% & then ,as usual,it stalled on a cfs3zip file & would go no further. When this happens again is there a way of closing down the pc other than just turning off the power supply ? i know this is risky but there is no other option that I know about. ? many thanks anyway. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 I assume the computer is freezing totally at this point? Can you use the mouse to go to "Start" "Turn Off Computer"? or is the mouse and pointer also frozen? If so actually turning off the power is not a good idea. You should use the power button at the front of the tower. That will shut it down in a safer manner. It will take a few moments to shut down but much better for the hard drive. Guest Wolfeymole Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 It's called 'Over Flanders Fields Phase 3' ; it should take about 20-30 mins to instal & is 1.70Mbs.That seems an extremely small file size for a game, are you sure? Quote
jlay Posted March 14, 2009 Author Posted March 14, 2009 New Software will not instal Yes , everything freezes , the mouse , the cursor , and also there is no response from ''Start , Turn Off Computer'' by trying to click or double-click ; then , after a time ,( 5-10 mins) , the cursor will not even respond to mouse movement  Quote
jlay Posted March 14, 2009 Author Posted March 14, 2009 New Software will not instal Yes .I was wrong , the game is supposed to unpack to 15 Gbs ,I've checked that there is enough free space on the hard drive. Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Right - if it crashes try pressing Ctrl,Alt and delete to get the tak manager and then close the game process. Are you 100% sure that the disks are clean and not scratched Also you wrote ''Insert dvd , browse it using windows explorer ; then I use the set-up exe icon ; then there is the option of using the CFS3 disc to get the CAB files So you have one DVD - yet the game developers used more than 1 disk - how many disks do you have? Its not working as I suspect its not genuine Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
Fortwilliam Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Could there be something in the registry from the first failed installation preventing furher installations? Quote
jlay Posted March 16, 2009 Author Posted March 16, 2009 There are two discs needed to set up 'Over Flanders Fields' CFS3 is the MS version of Combat Flight Simulator, this is needed to extract certain 'cab' ? files to be used in the 2nd disc : OFF which is an adapted version of CFS3 which is produced by OBD Software , this is the main Dvd & depicts World War 1 air combat Quote
jlay Posted March 17, 2009 Author Posted March 17, 2009 Software not installing I,ve now tried installing on a friend's laptop and it completed successfully in just 28 mins so the DVD's okay! There's obviously something wrong with the innards of my PC ; I shall have to take it somewhere to be repaired but before I do that do you have any ideas as to what it could be , I would like to talk to them with some apparent knowledge of the cause , before they start blinding me with science. Fluke Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 You could try Deleting the registry files. Also try deleting any files left in the install directory from previous attempts. Copy the files from cd to desktop and install from there. If you have any older versions of the game that could be interrupting the installation. Quote

You need to be very careful deleting Registry Files - don't do it manually UNLESS you know exactly what you are doing!! I use CCleaner, it's free, which will clean your Registry for you automatically and allow you to back it up just in case. It will also clean out temporary files etc. I suggest you download and run CCleaner, restart, and try your installation again. Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 CCleaner (ATF Cleaner) is a great program for clearing out unwanted temporary files, cookies etc. HOWEVER when it comes to editing a register is is just dangerous as are all registry editors and cleaners. We have all seen instances where even highly reputable registry editors and cleaners have created problems far greater than what they were supposed to cure. These programs should only be used by people competent to understand the ins and outs of each scan result before registry changes are allowed. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Dalo Harkin Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 I wouldnt just that far yet as to start messing with the registry. CAB files are basically just like zip files and are compressed You may be having an issue with your DVD/CD reader/writer, if its not reading all of the disk and accessing alot then it may be missing files. You can try and put the files onto the HDD,but again you rely on the optical drive to read the files - I would get a new optical fitted they are only about £12 and a DIY job - will take you literally 3 minutes to install it have a look at my building photos Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
jlay Posted March 19, 2009 Author Posted March 19, 2009 Thanks for the CCleaner lead , as you say , it doe.s a thorough job in clearing out unwanted cookies , temp files , etc ; beyond that I don't meddle with it. Quote
