Term Server updates

I have recently taken over a terminal server that is having several issues.

The server is a Dell PE running Win2k3 with dual 3.06 CPUs and 4GB of

memory. I have on average 40 users on it 24x7. The first problem I am facing

is that whenever a user opens a random excel file it locks up many if not

all users on the server. The server has Office 2000 Professional installed.

In the application log when excel freezes the server logs Application Hang

events. Even when the the server appears to be running correctly the

application log continously reports Event ID 1004 and 1001 MsiInstaller.

The event has something to do with AccessRuntimeMaster failed during request

from a component. Can someone give me advice on troubleshooting this. I will

be doing an upgrade from Office 2000 to Office 2003 Standard. Would it be a

better idea to do a complete unistall and then install Office 03 and wait to

see if the problem returns?

 

Another issue I have noticed is that in Terminal Services Manager the

terminal server has a question mark on it and I am unable to drill down to

the open sessions. What is causing this? It does not seem to happen all the

time but only when the server is trying to recover from the above excel

issue.

 

Lastly I was given some advise from an outside consulting company to setup

the server to download updates and install them at a later time. I have

found that this places a huge load on the server. I have since shut that off

but now I have the update for IE7 ready to install. Should I install IE7 or

keep IE6? If I keep IE6 how can I delete the downloaded IE7 so that the

server will not keep prompting me to install it?

Rather than upgrade to Office 2003, I'd uninstall the current

Office 2000 installation completely.

I would definitely uninstall Office 200 first. It has always been a

problematic child on TS. Office 2003 is fully TS aware. I've installed

in several Citrix/TS servers with absolutely no problems. Take Vera's

advice and read up first. It's well worth the effort...

I'd check the event logs for any clues...

Definitely set up the server as they recommend. DO NOT SET IT UP TO

INSTALL AUTOMATICALLY!!! Schedule the update for a time when no one is

using the server (ours are set for 3AM). It should only happen once a

month (most months).

 

I'd recommend you look at WSUS from Microsoft. It's free and it makes

things so much easier to keep up to date....

 

Get rid of IE7. It's not well thought of by most users and very few

corporate environments have gone whole hog with it. It's a *VERY*

different interface and can cause a lot of help desk calls. To get rid

of it, you should be able to bring up the list of updates, un-check it

and continue. You will be prompted as to whether you want to be shown

the update again. Choose "NO" and that's it.

 

I should say, though, that I use it and have actually gotten very used

to it. I've switched back to IE from FireFox as my default browser.
