Entered data is not retained

I had a previous recent thread relating to the problem: "Save password in

DUN".

I have used this desktop machine for about 6 months, an AV check showed

nothing. The machine has been otherwise normal. Data in files is edited,

saved, retained normally. Scandisk shows a normal hard disk.

I can dial up, but when I run my browser, at every one of my usual

bookmarked sites, get "Server Not Found".

In Control Panel/Internet Connections, Properties, the DUN

icon, in domain, I had originally set it correctly, now it shows

mail.copper.ne :it is supposed to be net. I reentered the correct

mail.copper.net, closed that screen. Reopened the Properties screen, again

it reads: mail.copper.ne. Each time this happens, the "t" is omitted in

"net".

Setting data into a standard window, it is not completely retained. I have

never before seen this in various W98SE machines.

Advice?

I will go through that website, redo the steps.

In TCP/IP Properties/Advanced, one item was checked, not seen before:

Allow binding to ATM, no value was indicated. Since this problem is

unusual to me, and that is an unknown setting, don't know it's effect.

BTW, on a different computer about 6 months ago, with dark lines in the

display, you advised uninstall/reinstall the video drivers in Safe Mode,

will be doing that shortly.

Good news, that site had one item that made the difference. Buried in

Modem Properties, the comment that normally in Extra there is no INIT

string. This machine had MD or MU (hard to see), I deleted it, and did

one other thing. I checked Use this Script, entered the domain address

there, it persisted, rebooted, dialup, now can hear the modem and now can

browse normally.

So the INIT string and the domain not persisting were the issues. The

normal location to put the domain name, it still does not persist, but I

have a working unit again. Be thankful for small favors.

Glad to hear that! I have nothing in the Extra Settings box, myself, of

the Modem Properties. (Once, I did put something in there to see extra

lines in the modem log I think, but that is gone now.) As far as using a

script, there seems to be something like that in my ISP Properties. I

doubt I use one-- but, if it has cured your situation, that's just fine.

Yea. I guess you are OK now. I'm glad to see you worked it out from that

site & whatever other fiddling. (I don't know that this NetZero

connectoid of mine involves a domain at all or even what a domain is.

And I'm not sure I want to!)

I see that too, just like you report, at...

"Control Panel, Network, Configuration tab, highlight TCP/IP, Properties

button, click OK to dreadful warning, Advanced tab"

It's just as you say there. "Allow binding to ATM" shows up in the

Property window, & "No" is selected in the Value window. Let it be, I

guess, especially as things are working again.

You don't put *anything_like* "mail.copper.net" as a server name in any part

of a DUN connection's Properties. That's a mail server address and has no

business as part of a DUN connection. It's useful only to a program used to

send or retrieve email.

Furthermore, you *do_not* want to log onto any domain. That's probably

what's screwing up the connection. Sorry again that I don't have a DUN

connection in front of me for reference, but that item that is checked by

default that talks about logging onto a server should be unchecked, and any

server name left blank. Those options aren't used for a standard public DUN

ISP.

Thanks, Gary.

Now with a working DUN, as above, I will remove those entries, try it and

post back.

IIRC (a senior with bad sleep), I put the ISP data there in other

machines in the past, it worked. I guess you are saying the correct phone

number is all that's necessary?

You have a much better memory than I do, above is right, of course. I

deleted the entries I'd made, checked the "Automatically detect the ...",

DUN works fine again.

Phone number, any additional dialing instructions (9 to get outside line,

for instance.) Username and password. AFAIK, that's it. And I'm not *sure*

where the default "log on to server" switch is set, but it needs to be

unset. Personally, I'd leave the one you have alone and create a new one.

Put in only the phone number and dialing instructions (if any) and then

username and password when prompted. See if it works. If not, find that

setting that talks about logging on to a server and uncheck it.

I did try that, a new connectoid, nameed it, entered phone number,

username, password, set that one as default,

Dialup several times, reboot, finally, dialup works, modem sounds normal,

but there is a very long (1 minute or so) "logging on to network" delay

that was never there before, then the connection is made.

The old one did work better, but this one is simpler.

Tomorrow I will look for "that setting that talks about logging on

to a server and uncheck it".

It's as I said... The default DUN connectoid works *except* for that "log on

to network" or "log on to server" setting (on the Advanced tab, I believe.)

That default setting needs to be unset for many if not most DUN connectoids.

It works fine now, as you suggested, I found the default setting "log on

to network" and unchecked it.

Based upon your data, this summarizes what worked for me, useful for next

time.

1. Create new connectoid.

2. In Properties:

a. Username

b. Password

c. Phone number- enter area code and phone number as one entry.

3. In Advanced: Uncheck Log on to Network

4. Network:

a. Remove NetBEUI

b. Select TCP/IP

c. Select MS Family Logon

5. Dialup, enter password, if working, a connection.

6. Disconnect.

7. Dialup again enter password, check Save Password box.

May have omitted something, if so please comment.

Thanks for your help.

The never-ending story.

I booted up today, DUN password blank ??

BTW, this computer greets me with a windows password screen, so be aware

that situation exists, don't know if it matters.

Anyway, on seond dialup after reboot, it still didn't save password, was

at Family logon.

I changed back to Windows logon. When I did that the other day, it called

for the OS CD, a few days ago, it got files, yet today when I went back

to Windows logon, again it asked for CD, again gets files- now why does

that happen??

Anyway, it saved password on a reboot, I shut down, booted up, it did not

save password. I dunno.

Sheesh! The original problem was that you had no DUN at all or it

wouldn't work, though, & that is solved now-- right?

| BTW, this computer greets me with a windows password screen, so be

| aware that situation exists, don't know if it matters.

It might matter, if both the logon & DUN passwords use the same .pwl

(password) file. Then, if your fix is to delete that, you lose both

passwords.

| Anyway, on seond dialup after reboot, it still didn't save password,

| was at Family logon.

Here's an article with suggestions...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/148925/en-us

Dial-up networking password is not saved

Read through it, & post a plan for examination. But I've personally

never had to do any of that-- I don't use any passwords, except the one

in my NetZero DUN. I don't seem to have the Registry settings that

article speaks of (including no ProfilesList), & the only .pwl file I

have is Default.pwl. And at Control Panel, Network, I am set... Client

for Microsoft Networks, Dial-Up Adapter, & TCP/IP. But I can't swear

that is what you should be!

So... we must hope Terhune hasn't fallen into a deeper than usual

earthquake!

Here are other articles, which may/may not precisely apply...

| called for the OS CD, a few days ago, it got files, yet today when I

| went back to Windows logon, again it asked for CD, again gets files-

Not sure. Did it seem to ask for the same files? Can it have wanted to

go back to Client for Microsoft Networks?

Many thanks for that information. Just today, I configured the firewall,

loaded the last updates of some utilities, and put the desktop away in

storage. It is for backup if my main machine needs repair. With age and

energy situations, I can't keep up with more than 2 machines, which I have

running now.

So I will save that excellent data for the next time I boot up this

machine, it will come in handy.

On my todo list is still that Dell 600 with the wierd video problem, some

of those suggestions were heavy-duty, so will take time.

Thanks again, will post on the Dell later. BTW, I assume your address in

your sig is invalid?

OK. If you have trouble with the password again, now I have discovered a

wealth of info at...

"START, Help, Windows 98 Troubleshooters, Modem, I cannot save my

password for my Dial-Up Networking connection"

(If you have trouble with blank pages there, post back for the cure.)

It's really a lot of what we already have discovered in those URLs. But

the 2nd suggestion does say you may need to be "Client for Microsoft

Networks" (not "Windows logon", as I think you said you are)...

.......Quote 2nd Help Screen.........

Is the Microsoft Client for Microsoft Networks installed?

Problems can occur if you have installed Dial-Up Networking, but have

| Many thanks for that information. Just today, I configured the

| firewall, loaded the last updates of some utilities, and put the

| desktop away in storage. It is for backup if my main machine needs

| repair. With age and energy situations, I can't keep up with more

| than 2 machines, which I have running now.

OK. You are welcome.

| So I will save that excellent data for the next time I boot up this

| machine, it will come in handy.

Go for those Help screens first thing! There is lots there!

| On my todo list is still that Dell 600 with the wierd video problem,

| some of those suggestions were heavy-duty, so will take time.

Take all the time you need. Terhune is still climbing out the

earthquake, anyhow, looks like-- & has lost 3 poodles & 7 fingernails!

| Thanks again, will post on the Dell later. BTW, I assume your address

| in your sig is invalid?

No. But usually I just tell those who try it to post to the group

instead!
