Remote Site & Printers

Hi all,

So we are looking at opening a 2nd site, just getting all the gear for

it now...at the 1st site (orig) we have a DB svr and a TS svr...all

running great....

For the 2nd site, I have been trying to avoid running a VPN as my

experiences with them have been average.....they've screwed me around

to the point of if I can avoid them, I will...

So I had planned on just getting everyone to remote into the TS and

thought all would be good....

What I hadn't planned on was the introduction of network printers at

the 2nd site...I was told originally just LPT and USB printers used

and I thought ok, not a problem, just bring them through the

session....

At a previous business, we had mapped network printers between sites

using IIS ....now that worked incredibly...but the thing is, they had

a 2k3 server at both ends....what i'm wondering is, can I do the same

with a XP pro machine at site 2? or will I need to make it 2k3 svr as

well?

Also I am struggling to remember the actual ports used for this, I

thought it was just 80, but I could be wrong...

Any suggestions on this whole thing? Any thoughts on the xp -> 2k3 or

2k3 -> 2k3 for mapping network printers?

Thanks,

Nos.

p.s. i had already written this but it didn't post, so if i've missed

anything its prob cos i thought i'd covered it already sorry....

Are you planning on putting your TS server directly on the Internet?

Not really recommended, but definitely possible.

Have you thought about an SSL VPN vs. an IPSec or site-to-site VPN?

Network printers will be just fine as long as you are using the

latest version of RDP.

Just map them from XP and call it a day.

Just make sure that you are using printers that use currently installed

W2K3 print drivers and you "should" not have any issues.

Hey Moncho,

thanks for the thoughts....so by your reasoning, I should be fine to

just connect to the network printer with the xp machine, then just use

the RDP to forward it through? only problem would be I would have over

90 printers showing up, if i had 30 users, with 3 network printers,

all bringing them through, not including the ones that are usb/

lpt...it would be near impossible to find anything but the default

yeah?

also I don't want the TS to be put directly on the internet...

any more idea's? what is the best method? IPSec? or the site to site

VPN? (which was more the way i was leaning, if i do that..otherwise I

just use rdp to connect to 124.124.124.124) ....is that ok to do it

that way or slow?

thanks,

How many users are going to be at this remote site initially?

Do all your users NEED all three printers setup on their machine?

I am thinking no, but there may be a few that do, so it may not

be that bad to just map the printers.

I map about 60 printers with no issues, but many of them use

the same print driver or the printers sat idle and did not take

up many resources.

There are others in this group that may have experience with

different/better solutions, but depending on the user count, type of

applications, and budget, your requirements may/will change.

When I first read your post about opening a new remote site,

I assumed it would be < 5 users, but you mentioned 30 users,

so I could be wrong.

You can configure the clients to only redirect the default printer.

And note that users will only see their own printers, so they will

not have a problem finding their printer(s).

911913 - How to redirect the default printer of a Terminal Services

client to a Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server session (applies to

W2K as well)
