Have been trying for a few days to get my laptop to boot up :(. Managed through the data rescue facility to burn 9 cds of my pictures, docs etc., but still wont budge. Have to hold power button to switch on/off, and it goes straight onto the recovery centre, but unable to do anything. Called manufacturer as it is 14 months old and out of warranty and have been told almost immediately by them its the hard drive and will cost so much to get it repaired, would be better to buy a new one after I pay £150 to get it collected and any repair charges on top. Felt it was a bit of a quick diagnosis, he got me to tap F2 button on start up and told me from there.

Is a Sony Viao VGN-NR11S, with Vista Home Premium, would be so grateful for any help or advice with this.

Thanks

Assuming it is a hard drive replacement is not that difficult. If you feel that you don't want to give it a try go to a reputable (small) independent shop and have them do it for you. That collection charge is way over the top.

I just checked the model and your best option is probably the shop but if you are pretty handy and have a safe environment to work, DIY is doable.
