Session based printing in MS TS?

Recommended Posts

For those that are familiar with Citrix, is there feature in the MS vanilla

terminal services that provides the same functionality as "Session based

printing policies" in Citrix? I'm asking because we are small business

that's tired of paying for Citrix and we want to investigate Windows Server

2008 TS solutions. We have two print servers and want to assign different

printers to different groups of users along with the appropriate default

printer.

With the new session broker, TS gateway, etc.., I'm sure many small to

medium businesses are thinking the same thing.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Session based printing in MS TS?

Yes, easy print looks awesome. I watched the web cast and this will help a

lot for our remote users. However, the feature I'm looking for is based on

Citrix session printing. In Citrix, you can "import" a print server and

assign printers from this print server to users who log into Citrix using

policies. At our remote offices, we have a mixture of Windows 2000/XP

clients that are locked down and do not have any local printers installed.

Print jobs (traffic) are sent over the private network with ICA traffic to

the respective offices. Simply put, we use print servers not local print

queues on the clients.

We could change our print model since TS '08 Easy print reduces traffic, but

we would first need to update our Windows 2000 clients and do a lot of

testing as our industry uses some pretty complex forms. To get this feature

in 2003 TS or earlier, we would need to use logon scripts achieve this

session based feature with vanilla TS. My question is, are there any Group

Policy features or other methods for achieving this?

Thanks,

Re: Session based printing in MS TS?

No, there are no standard GPO settings that do this. I do this in a

single kixtart logon script. It helps tremendously if the naming

convention of your workstations and printers reflects their

location.
