I have a BT Home Hub and up until a few days ago it was working just fine but now I get 'Limited or no connectivity' when I try to get online using wireless. I can connect if I use an Ethernet cable but apart from that, I get nothing.

A few days ago my laptop had to go in for a repair as Windows XP had gone all screwy. I got it back last night but couldn't successful connect. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I suspect that your wireless internet settings were altered in some way either during the course of the repair or were altered by whatever cause the need for repair in the first place.

I am sure that BT must provide instructions for setting up a wireless connection when the hub was delivered and that they must been followed if there was no problem before.

Limited or not connectivity generally refers to the connection between the PC and the Router. If you were given software from BT, I would suggest that you repeat the process of installing the wireless network.

Ok, new problem in addition to the current connectivity issue. When I insert the CD I got with the hub into my laptop, nothing happens. Like there is no CD Drive

So it seems that we will have to sort out the drive before the connection.

Is this generally happening or just with this disk.Try inserting another cd. (not a DVD) You do not need to run any programs from it, just make sure that it is being recognised. If it is, the BT disk is probably faulty, if not then it is drive related.

Ok just be sure that the game was a CD and not a DVD. Assuming it is we need to look at your device manager and see if it shows any problem with that drive.

The easiest way is to right click on "My Computer," a small menu will appear. Click on Manage.

In the left column of the window that will come up click on "Device Manager." You will see a list of hardware items. One will be DVD/CD Rom Drives. There will be a little + sign. Click on it and see if there are any warning signs Xs or ?s or !s and let us know.

Neither do I but click on the + at disk drives and see if it is there. Then since you are good with screenshots follow the directions I gave you before but instead of device manager click on "Disc Management" and post another screenshot.

According to your screenshots you do not have a CD drive. Since you have put a disk into one I assume you disagree.

Do you have any idea whether they opened up the laptop? Because unless it just failed now and assuming it worked before, it looks like someone may have neglected to reconnect it.

What was the problem that caused you to go for service in the first place?

I think they did open it up so it could be that they forgot to reconnect the CD Drive -_- In which case I guess I'll take it back to them.

The problem which caused it to go for service was that windows wouldn't let me log in. If I tried to log in normally then it would come up with an error and not load any further than the background. If I tried logging on in Safe Mode then it wouldn't let me log in at all, it would just boot me back the the select user screen. The guy said that Windows had messed up and he had to reinstall it.

Ok well that seems to be the best bet since laptops are not like PCs. While it could be drivers, I don't see how. The laptop should recognise the drive even if the drivers were missing.

I don't know why it had to be opened just to reinstall windows unless they were looking for hardware problems. Be careful where you go.

When the 'repair' took place - what did they actually do - did they run a recovery colsole if there were any?

it sounds to me like they have removed the chipset drivers for the MOBO - you will have a CD that came with the laptop like 'tools and utilities' or 'drivers'

the problem you will have is that if the drive is not recognised it will not read CD/DVD's - what is the make and model of the laptop?

If it were a PC then I would open it up but yea, laptops are totally different and I don't have a clue about them.

I'm not sure exactly what they did, I'll have to ask my old man as he's the one who dropped it off and picked it up. The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6000. I'll have a dig around for bits that came with the laptop.

Dalo said here the chipset drivers. So click the plus by chipset and download that one. Save that site to favorites if you need other drivers.

Ok, I downloaded the chipset, installed and restarted. Put the CD in that came with the BT Home Hub and still nothing. Tried it with a different CD and still nothing :(

Edit: When I put a CD in the CD Drive it makes the usual whirling sound of loading a CD up but thats it. I don't know if that means anything.

When you put a CD in, does it say No Disk in My Computer?

Check Device Manager:

  • Right-Click My Computer and select Properties
  • Click on the Hardware Tab and click on Device Manager
  • Is there any yellow ! or red x by the CD\DVD drives?

It doesn't show anything in My Computer about a disc when I put one in the drive and I posted a screenshot of My Devices a few posts up. Problem is, there is no CD\DVD drives on there.

In Device Manager (the first screen shot you posted) did you click the + like beeceebee said. What does it say there?

Can you make another screen shot after you clicked the + by Disk Drives in Device Manager.

Sorry, i really didn't think. Disk drives has got nothing to do with CD\DVD Drives.

It does look like there is a loose connection, that it does not pick up the CD\DVD Drive.

Restart the computer and when the pc boots up press F2 or Del (It will say on the first screen which key) to enter the BIOS. Go to the first or second line and see if it picks up the CD\DVD drive, if not then there is a hardware problem.

It doesn't mention anything about a CD/DVD drive until I get down to the Boot Sequence part.

It's being taken back in tomorrow so hopefully they will sort that out then finally, we can see about the wireless connection.

Thanks for all your help so far, I would be totally stumped without it.

I got my laptop back, the disk drive is fixed and working now, it wasn't connected =/

I reinstalled the BT Home Hub CD that came with the package then I had a look at the IP address of the wireless connection and saw it was something like 164.xxx.xx.x so I manually configured the IP address and set it too something like 192.xxx.xxx.xxx similar to the IP address of the connection used to connect with the Ethernet cable. It doesn't give me Limited or no connectivity any more, in fact it doesn't mention anything not working but I still can't view any web pages using the wireless
