BAS007 Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Hi guys the title of my post sums up the problem my laptop is facing. l cannot use my cd/dvd drive anymore. l have an acer asipre 5610z with windows vista home premium. For some reason, it's not downloading updates. there are so many failed updates and it keep telling me updates are available but when l try to run it, it takes for ever and it's set to update automatically but it keeps failing to update. Now the hl-dt-st dvdram gsa-t20n ata device is in the device manager with an error code 39. l tried to follow the instructions in device manager to find solutions but it doesn't work. l will really appreciate any help from you guys. RandyL Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Hi; You seem to have two different problems. 1. Windows updates fail. 2. Your DVD drive does not work. Which issue should we address first? I'm also confused about your operating system. You say your OS is Vista Home premium but your profile says you have Vista Ultimate. Looking at the Acer site it seems your model mainly shipped with XP. Can you clarify exactly what you have and what you had when you got it please? Quote We are all members helping other members. BAS007 Posted March 20, 2009 Author Posted March 20, 2009 l don't know a lot about computers but l am sure window vista is the os on my pc. when l turn it on there is a welcome tap that comes up every time and it tells me that window vista home premium is the OS. lt has been working fine since l got it less than 3yrs ago. lt came with a free three mth protection from norton. And it has gadgets on the right side of the screen when l turn it on. You are right. l probably have two problems. So how can l fix the two problem starting with the easiest one first.? Quote
Match Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 (edited) Hi BAS007 I think first we need to be sure about what operating system you do have. If you Click Start Button (Bottom left corner), Click Control Panel, Click on System and Maintenance, Click on Welcome Center, You should get a screen that looks like this :- please refer to the image below. At the top it tells you your operating system, what CPU you have, how much RAM you have and what Graphics Card you have It also tells you the computer name, we do not need to know the computer name for security reasons, But could you tell us the other things please. http://www.buildeasypc.com/pics/windows_vista/winvista_17.jpg Edited March 20, 2009 by Match Quote

BeeCeeBee Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 The warning appears to be a driver issue. Go back and copy all the information on that line with the warning. That should tell us what CD drive you have and from that we can help you update the drivers. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain

Plastic Nev Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 (edited) Which brings us round to the second problem, Windows updates appears to be not working correctly or not at all. Have you had reason recently to have done a Windows repair, either yourself or a technician in the course of another repair? If so have a look here- Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP installation or you repair a Windows XP installation Even if a repair hasn't been done, and although you are running Vista, it may be you can find a solution by following the procedure given, or have a look see if there is similar for Vista.
