Hi,a few weeks ago i had a nasty worm, sent laptop to pc guy,who ended up formatting it,he as re-put vista home premium 32.

first problem was that it wanted me to activate vista, which he had done, but i did it via the automated phone service, that problem as now gone.

windows defender is not working right at all, message include,c\prog files\WD\mpclient.dll is either not designed to run on windows or there is a error.

i cant download anything, email attatchments, etc, which i have both tried to open and/or save.

cant switch on windows defender.

i did in IE,tools>internet options>advanced>restore internet explorer settings.

i then tried downloading a pdf email attatchment,i could see it on the desktop, but the message from WD came up i click ok and it was all gone,2nd time i ignored the WD error message and managed to save it.

i have also turned off UAC,

its now driving me round the pole!!!!!!

i guess all problems are related.

Was this a proper PC repair guy or some bloke from the pub Teeny?

The reason I ask is because of this statement.

You have about half a dozen different problems going on here which to my mind stem from the initial install.

Please try to break it down and explain EXACTLY bit by bit what happened after you got the pc back.

after i got laptop back, not straight away,a message came up saying i needed to activate vista, told pc guy ,he insisted that he had done it and it should be ok, he came to have a look,(at work)so we pluged it into modem, which at home its on a wireless router.the message never came up.but he didnt know why email attatchments wouldnt save,or windows defender will not switch on.he suggested copying WD files from my sons pc and putting those on in the hopes that WD would work properly.that didnt work.

so next day i re-activated over the phone.that solved that.

all the while this windows defender problem has been there.

ever since i have had the laptop back i have not at all been able to download any attatchment etc.

the pdf attatchment i thought i had managed to save is not there, now that the laptop has been off and re started.

Has any one been to Microsoft to get all the updates that are needed at all?

This "PC Guy" doesn't have a clue to my mind.

Do you have any PDF decoding software installed like Adobe or Foxit?

in the update history, they are microsoft updates.i myself have been to microsoft.com gone for updates to defender,do the validation, comes back genuine, click download,a box with nothing in it,comes on as quick as a flash, top left corner, then ask to save to desktop,it now thinks it as done, thank you for downloading WD.but of course it is nowhere.

i have adobe 9.
