We have 2 laptops that have developed a problem today. I am have them working in safe mode and will run eset, malwarebytes and superantispyware to see if they have picked up anything.

Are these the best to run or is there another system i should try.

The laptop seems to boot up ok, it goes through all the window starting up sequences as normal. When it gets to the main windows screen with all the icons on it, it re-boots itself. and it will just keep going round in a loop starting and re-booting.

I put them in safe mode and have run eset, but it did not pick up anything. I have also ran superantispyware and malewarebytes and thet have not picked up on anything.

I tried a system restore and it seemed to work ok for a short period then it shutdown again. I have just restored to an earlier date again and I am running the anti virus programs again.

Any thoughts?

Aplogies for highjacking the other post it looked like they where having the same problem as me.

One laptop seems to be responding to the system restore, but it is not making any difference to the other one.

Any thoughts?

Hi Clucky, how is the one that seems to be responding to the system restore? has it worked?

The one that is not responding, are there any clicks or knocking or tapping sounds coming from the hard drive area of the machine?

I am running anti virus programs on the one that has responded to the system restore. At the moment it is running ok in normal mode.

The other laptop I can only run in safe mode. I am trying the anti virus programs again to see if the pick anything up. I did not notice any knocking coming from the hard drive

Hi again, the one that now seems ok, go back to system restore, turn it off, then reboot and turn it back on again to make sure whatever the problem was is deleted from the restore points, then let us know if it is still ok.

If we can be sure that one is OK then we can concentrate on the other.

One laptop appears to be working ok now.

System restore is not making any difference to the other one. I have tried 3 different restore points going back over a week, but it makes no difference.

It will work ok in safe mode and I can run the various anti virus, but they do not detect anything major. As soon as I try to switch on in normal mode is just goes in a loop of starting up and rebooting.

It is an Acer 5220, we bought it at Christmas. Xp was already installed so I dont have a disc. I have no idea about the recovery partition.

When it boots up I get a warning box "A duplicate name exists on the network" I dont know if this is related to the problem.

.

That's a networking problem and if I think right refers to the computer name?

but when the laptop boots up press alt and f10 and that should get you to the recovery console, you are looking for a none destructive repair option.

full explanation here and pdf download on how to here just in case you don't have the manual.

How to recovery your system from bootup

  1. Locate the Alt key, to the left of the space bar, and F10, on the top row of keys.
  2. Power the system on.
  3. When the system is powered on, tap the Alt and F10 keys together at the same time when the Acer splash screen appears.
It should state "Please wait a moment..." with the Acer logo in the upper left hand corner.
  4. At the eRecovery Management menu it will ask you how to restore.
  5. Click on the restore option you would like to use.
