Service Pack Help...?

My PC has recently returned from the 'doctors'! The engineers have completed some sort of restore and this is having an adverse effect on the running of internet explorer (ie) and the associated service packs etc.

 

When I type in an internet address in the address bar, a second ie window opens and a blank screen appears and the PC freezes. I then have to do a 'ctrl, alt, del' to turn ie off. Pressing the home icon or selecting a favourite also has this effect. However, if I do a search using google and follow links, then generally all is fine.

 

I have tried to download an updated version of ie (currently I have version 6), but the same thing happens. I have also visited the Microsoft website to try and download a servicepack, but it does not allow me to option to download and a page within Microsoft's site says, The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

I have also tried inserting my Microsoft XP home edition CD into the drive in an attempt to re-install the original version of ie, but it is asking me to insert the service pack 3 cd, but I don't have this.

The PC went to the engineer late last week because it had a virus and I have ran a virus check and all is clear, which makes me think that it is something to do with the restore.

Sounds like you should get a 'second opinion'. The doctor has not served you well. I suggest you take it back and ask that it be properly fixed at no further cost to you. However, if the doctor gave it back to you in this condition, I wouldn't take my machine back to that 'doc'.

 

There's no saying what the virus did to your computer. Why not backup all your files and reload XP and your applications?

We could offer some advice in the way of fixing this perhaps, but the better idea in this case I feel would be to take it back to the engineer.

 

After all you have paid good money to have it sorted but it isn't. He should do whatever is needed.

 

I know he may try to fob you off with the virus having done the damage, but he should still repair that, he was paid to do it.

 

A shame you didn't find us first, we could have advised in the removal of that virus with less chance of a problem afterwards.

Totally agree!

 

Any engineer worth his pay will check your PC over before sending it on its way back to you. Sometimes he will charge you more than originally quoted as unforseen problems do arise, but stiil, it should come back in one piece and working.

 

It sounds like he may have run a repair install or a System Restore, removing IE7 files, and Windows still thinks IE7 is running in some way. It does happen and the results are often unpredictable.

 

Send it back for more surgery.
