Greetings, for the last two days my computer has displayed a black screen with the cursor after logging in.

Here are the other symptoms I've come across will trying to fix this problem:

  • The Taskbar and Cortana won't respond when clicked on.
  • I tried doing a system reset but windows tells me that a problem occurred so it won't go though with the reset.
  • I also tried to turn windows back a update and it doesn't start the setting app when I try to access updates
  • In safe mode the computer says sihost.exe unknown hard error (If I click on this and pressing ok, the safe mode screen turns black with the cursor remaining).
  • When not is safe mode, I've found that not taskmgr appear to be the only way to start other programs. (I can't use the windows key + r to launch run on it own, but starting a new process through taskmgr works fine. Just to note I can't use the hot key for taskmgr either but I can use the the combination of crl+alt+delete to start taskmgr).

I have also tried doing the following when combating this technical issue:

  • System restore didn't address the issue when I ran it
  • I've also tried to use a usb to re-install windows but the laptop tells me that it can't find a usb.
  • I have Norton installed on my computer and it is up to date. I ran a scan in safe mode with Nortan and several security programs (Norton, Norton power eraser, malwarebytes,Windows-KB890830-x64-V5.50, Kaspersky TDSSKiller,... etc) to ensure that no malicious software (including rootkits, spyware and other things) are installed on my computer
  • I have used the x-source boot and ran the sfc command's to verify the directory and files. I can send the generated log files. In addition I also checked ran the bootrec commands to inspect if windows was booting correctly.
  • I have an Nvidia getforce graphics card installed and tried disabling to see if that would get rid of the black screen but it didn't solve the problem.

What should I do?
