OK, I am not computer-savvy, but this issue is driving me crazy!

I recieve and e-mail from the SD association to which I belong. I open the e-mail just fine, click the link to their site,, get there just fine and go to OPEN the newsletter which is required reading and my computer will NOT open the document. Instead it flashes on and off as it attempts hundreds of times to download the document. No error message, no option to stop it other than get off the site immediately. This is a recent occurence and it happens on any e-mail attachment as well. The only change to my system has been an upgrade on the Adobe Reader. I went into a MS auto-help center and described the problem and that led me to Control Panel, Default Programs, Associate file types, and I attempted to open the source of xls, ppt, and doc but the problem remained. I did not however reboot, which I will do next. Thanks in advance for any advice.
