Adding an 2nd TSS (2003)

Hi,

I need to split off (not really load balancing) half our our organization

from our existing TS, which houses an application (a real drag) to a new TSS(

2003 Standard R2) to relieve some of the burden from the Application/TS

server. This is a medium term fix. I'm in a real bind, given the current

application and Hardware resources i'm supprised its working at all.

So, how do I have an additional TSS share resources from an Application

server (again, the new TSS will not have the application loaded)?

If the application can be run from a file server, you could sinply

create a shortcut on the second TS and point it to the application

on the first TS. Otherwise, you'll have to install the application

on the second TS.

Thank you for your assistance on this troublesome matter.

I did try you suggestion, by adding a shortcut to the new TSS won't that

cause more network traffic than accessing the application directly? shouldn't

terminal services should be a standalone server w/o applications to burden

its resources. In my case I have a application that utilizes SQL 2005. Also

I have 100 users. the users also have the ability to access websites through

the applicaiton. By adding more TSS cant i effectivly share the load of the

termimal services connections w/o installing the same application on mutiple

TSS? is it possible to have the TSS point to the applicaiton server through

(and I 'm guesing) a pipe or ODBC coneciton?

I really appricate your assistance I cant thank you enough.

You didn't mention any specific details about the application in

your first post, so you got a *very* general answer.

I am puzzled by your statement:

A Terminal Server is *designed* to run user applications, that is

it's sole task!

I am still not sure at all about your environment. Can you explain

what your current Terminal Server is doing? And do you have a

separate SQL server? Which server hosts the SQL frontend

application? To which server do your users connect, and what do

they do on that server?

Vera,

Sorry for the confusion, I have inherited my problem w/o any real TSS

background knowledge.

I have a 100 users (windows 2000 server) that connect to a grossly

underpowered to a single server that houses a front end and back end

application. This is also the Terminal Services server. Yes I cringe at the

thought of this on a daily basis.

Along with the front end application (on the TS server) is a polling service

that processes exported data into the back end application (SQL 2005 DB) from

our remote locations.

I have already split off its polling client which does the lions share for

the processing (works in tandum with Polling serrvice) onto another server.

The front end application also allows for web access to vendors.

The back end houses SQL 2005 32 bit where the db resides.

Users are contantly running calls via crystal reports from the DB.

What I thought I could do is to split off terminal services to a stand alone

server.

Then split off the front end applicaiton, pollling services and client onto

another seperate server, and have the backend application remain on the

orginial server. then as more users are included into the mix I could add

additonal TSS to form a bit of a cluster. This would seem a more efficient

way to run TS. Also if I wanted to centrally house other applicaitons for

all users to access, i would not run into the same problem.

How would I connect via TSS to an applicaion server without installing the

front end applicaiton on the actual TSS?

Am I way off the mark, or is this possible? What do you suggest?
