Diurno Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Upgrades!! We all love them, (I know I do). :D I was just wondering, if you are thinking of upgrading or have upgraded your PC recently. I'm tempted to get a Core i7 and a Rampage Extreme II and sell my Maximus Extreme and Q6600. Or buy a HD4870. To be or not to be, that is the question. Any thoughts about what I should buy? Dalo Harkin Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Well I would stay clear of the i7 route mate - they are extortionately priced - your Q6600 when overclocked is more than a match for them. for an i7 MOBO you are looking over £200 (for a decent one) you can get your 4870 for that :) Only thing I have done recently is add more RAM and HDD's :D Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.

I wouldnt go for the watercooling - just use air if the case is good enough and use a Freezer 7 and you will get 3.3 out of your quad. Diurno Posted March 23, 2009 Author Posted March 23, 2009 Ha okay, my case is the Thermaltake Xaser III (getting old my good girl) but it has like hmm 7 fans, I think, so the temperatures are normally low. Diurno Posted March 23, 2009 Author Posted March 23, 2009 I can't afford the GTX295, thats like £500. Hmm, might get the GTX280 as apparently it is better than the HD4870 1Gb. Any thoughts? Diurno Posted March 24, 2009 Author Posted March 24, 2009 Haha, so basically the GTX295, is the "extreme" at the moment. Top-range. Diurno Posted March 25, 2009 Author Posted March 25, 2009 Do you think, it's going to be more powerful than the GTX295? To be honest I don't, possibly if overclocked but hmm I still doubt it. DirtyPolo Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 I'm sure they will elease this to be seen doing something as Dave said but in the background they wont be happy at Nvidia's overtake and will be working up something special that make take a bit longer. Dalo Harkin Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 The thing that annoys me is that all ATI seem to do is sandwich 2 GPUs together. I know Nvidia have been guilty of it in the past too but they are extortionately expensive and its normally cheaper to buy 2 of the original cards and SLI or crossfire them. Diurno Posted March 26, 2009 Author Posted March 26, 2009 I agree that they are expensive, but to be honest they are the future and we can see this happening with CPUs. I know that they are two completely different things, but CPUs started with "one processing unit" then two (dual core) and four (quad core) and god knows what i7 use, i dont even know. DirtyPolo Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 It's the old game of "How much can you fit in this small space" In the future you'll probably find 4 GPUs in the space of a single GPU nowadays, in that time, the i7 will be laughed at!, well it is now at these prices! Match Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 It's the old game of "How much can you fit in this small space" when you start asking that question the answer comes down to lining up gold atoms, and how much V+ you could put through a line of gold atoms without melting them? If you can make a transistor, resistor, capacitor, and diode for a light wave then your going to be rich. But as for now Its a case of as soon as one product is thought of, then they start working on the next, so as one reaches the market the next is not far behind. and of course the new one will always be expensive to cover the cost of developing the next. so it comes down to paying the money for the latest or just being happy with what you need, and as I have more sense than money, (Not hard I don't have any Money) I will be happy with what I need. and as what I have does the job, until such time as I start finding that the software I want to run won't work on my machine then I see no need to upgrade. Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 but thats the point software developers are limited by the technology thats around at the time, and base it on that, so software will ALWAYS be behind hardware Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
