Lost password to unlock laptop with Windows 10

My brother in law passed away and we are locked out of his computer. We used his login to try and access his password, but he didn't set up a device here. I used his Microsoft Login and PW to access this account in hopes of finding his local access password. Is there any way to open his locked laptop without resetting it and losing all his data? Can we just re-install Windows 10?
