suziqjjc Posted March 31, 2009 Author Posted March 31, 2009 When I read that post, I felt like I was being scolded for not doing what I was told correctly - "it seems you may be missing the basic things you have been asked to do" - I've admitted I don't know much about this stuff but I can take direction. In addition, Quote "(I am still concerned about what you did with regard to that proxy and I have a good guess at what you meant about changing the Firefox connection box. TCP/IP settings in your network perhaps.)" Can you explain this, I don't understand what you are saying here. Anyway I appreciate the help you and the others have been giving me. If only I hadn't clicked on that virus melt! Can you tell me briefly whats involved - how long will it take. Thanks Quote
Plastic Nev Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Hi Sue, I don't think you are being "Scolded", It is more the fact we are getting a bit frustrated. The simple thing now is look at and read that link to Dell technical support and have a good read of it. If there is any part of it you don't understand very well, tell us which bit and we can try to explain it. Once you have a full understanding of what will happen while doing the restore back to factory settings, and how to do all that, we can then carry on. Next thing I would like is for you to stop doing Google searches for a while till we are sure we have it sorted. Then please tell us what it is you are searching for on Google and why you need that info. You may well be walking into a trap that is re-infecting your computer by one of those search answers. suziqjjc Posted March 31, 2009 Author Posted March 31, 2009 Hi Plastic Nev, Thanks for your reply - I just had a look at Dell Support - but I have a headache now so I think I will wait and tackle this in the am. I have backed up some stuff already but want to make sure I am doing this right. I am looking forward to getting this resolved so will check back with you guys tomorrow. I'm sure I will have at least one question. Thanks again, Sue Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Hi sue, no problem. Once your backup is done you need only really familiarise yourself with step 3 under XP. It is not difficult but you big concern has to be backup (unless there is nothing much there to concern yourself with.) But please listen to what Plastic Nev has said. There are programs that can be installed that will give you advice about site safety. We can help get you set up properly once your computer is clean but you really should stay away from the internet (except us of course :) ) until this is all sorted. The big shame would be to do a restore only to reinfect it again. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
suziqjjc Posted April 1, 2009 Author Posted April 1, 2009 Thanks BeeCeeBee, Am just finished with back-up so will be restoring then, will let you know how it goes - I hope I have what I need...... Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Since your email is all web based you really are most concerned with files. If you have what you feel is important and it is sitting on the other side of the room then you should be fine. Make sure you are aware of your internet settings so you can get yourself back on line. Then we will start a new thread on security for you. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
suziqjjc Posted April 1, 2009 Author Posted April 1, 2009 Ok, I'm back to basics now - I reinstalled McAfee, but thats it, I haven't done anything else, I saw a link here to Firefox so will download that now - Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Ok that is fine even though I am no big fan of McAfee. Also go back to the disinfection process and download both the malwarebytes and SUPERantispyware again. Keep them updated and use them once a week. I do a SAS scan one week and a Malwarebytes the next. If either one or my AV comes up with anything other than cookies I will run the other as well. Considering your history you should also get McAfee site adviser as an add on. It identifies sites that contain threats etc. It is not 100% and may even be wrong from time to time but since I started using it I have found it indispensible. You just really need to be careful and if you have a question post it to a new thread and give it time. You do not want to do this again. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." suziqjjc Posted April 1, 2009 Author Posted April 1, 2009 Ok BeeCeeBee, I think I have the site adviser as part of the package but will definately download the other 2 and scan every week. Plastic Nev asked what I was using google so much for - I was actually looking for party invites when I got the virus - I am doing a couple of lens on Squidoo and was going some research, I was also looking for some clipart when I got more redirections. Anyway, I hope that is the end of the virus and I can get back to normal - I would like to thank you and the rest of the team here for your help and support, it was very much appreciated. I have this site bookmarked now and I'm sure I will be back though not with any virus related questions (I hope!) I will also come back with a donation when my cc is a little healthier! Thanks again, Sue Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Ok lets call this closed but with one thought. clipart, screensaver, smileys, emoticons and all that stuff that is offered for free often comes with a price. Be careful and feel free to come back and look around in the other forum topics for issues and questions that others have posed. And if you have any questions ask. This is now closed!
