Guest Florian Heigl Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 Hi, while doing a test robocopy job from our old to the new fileserver i noticed that diskpart started being extremely unreliable. Normally there should be 14 or 15 Volumes to be listed; about 10 of these are mounted into various directories that are in the robocopy target area. When trying to list volumes diskpart will at times report none, at times one or two of them and error out. Similar behaviour shows in Disk Manager, it shows all volumes but some lack the NTFS-label. Also not all volumes are selectable in the snapshot property tab (which makes things really bad) I have to admit it's been a long time since I used the mount-into-a- directory option, i think last time was in 2001. --- H:\>net start "Logical Disk Manager" The requested service has already been started. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2182. H:\>diskpart Microsoft DiskPart version 5.2.3790.3959 Copyright © 1999-2001 Microsoft Corporation. On computer: TSSRV02-NEU DISKPART> list volume Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info ---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- -------- The disk management services could not complete the operation. DISKPART> exit Leaving DiskPart... Also i found the following errors from VSS Event Type: Warning Event Source: VSS Event Category: None Event ID: 12290 Date: 12/3/2007 Time: 4:51:05 AM User: N/A Computer: TSSRV02-NEU Description: Volume Shadow Copy Service warning: GetVolumeInformationW(\\? \Volume{29ef1005-42a7-45e0-adb3-f422f1eabe6d}\,NULL,0,NULL,NULL, [0x00000000], , 260) == 0x00000005. hr = 0x00000000. At the end of the day these all point back to some inability for querying the Logical Disk Manager, which showed no errors in event log over hours but 5 minutes ago finally logged the following: Event Type: Information Event Source: Removable Storage Service Event Category: None Event ID: 83 Date: 12/3/2007 Time: 5:26:31 AM User: N/A Computer: TSSRV02-NEU Description: RSM is rebuilding its database file(s). Event Type: Warning Event Source: Removable Storage Service Event Category: None Event ID: 93 Date: 12/3/2007 Time: 5:26:31 AM User: N/A Computer: TSSRV02-NEU Description: Neither copy of the RSM database is consistent: Reconstructing using the main datafile. After that it said the recontruct had been successful, but the list issue persists. To make things weirder, the robocopy runs like a charm. I wonder if this is known behaviour or if i should open a support call. I had hoped to give our new fileserver a more flexible layout but that seems not a good option if that is unstable ;) Any pointers (apart following into the RSM error which i honestly consider more a sympton than a cause)
Guest Florian Heigl Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 Re: Logical Disk Manager - big issue under load sorry about the lack of basic information. W2k3 Enterprise + SP2 + the current hotfixes windows update picked. System is a Dell Poweredge 2950 / Perc5i Raid CPU Load on all cores is low, i/o throughput is low too, just very high IO/s from robocopy /create run. Regards, Florian
