raters Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 I have a pc and laptop, the laptop connects to the internet via the router but the pc will not.On investigation the network card seems to be connected to the router but will not connect to the internet. On checking Network availability no networks are available under Network Connections. We have 2 user bases one for us and one for the kids. When I checked the kids access I have a screen with restore active desktop and most of thr icons have dissapeared. I am not a happy chappy right now as the main set up program for the internet was done on the pc and i'm not sure where the set up disc is if needed. I recently installed C cleaner could this have done something to the registry or other set up files? Please help i,m very sad:( Quote
Match Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Hi Raters On investigation the network card seems to be connected to the router but will not connect to the internet is this a wireless connection? or a hard wired Ethernet/RJ45 cable connection? We have 2 user bases Do you mean you have 2 User accounts on one computer? or two Computers? i'm not sure where the set up disc is if needed Could be worth looking for but not essential I recently installed C cleaner Did you use it? a) to clean files b) to clean the registry c) was there a reason for this? When I checked the kids access I have a screen with restore active desktop and most of thr icons have dissapeared This starts to point towards Malware, do you have any antivirus/spyware programs and which ones? Could this be a result of your Kids Messing and deleting the icons? or changing settings? It might also help if you could tell us the make and model of your router and network card If you can answer these questions as accurately as possible we should be able to get you back into the happy campers club :) Quote
raters Posted March 28, 2009 Author Posted March 28, 2009 Hi Raters is this a wireless connection? or a hard wired Ethernet/RJ45 cable connection? It is a wireless connection Do you mean you have 2 User accounts on one computer? or two Computers? We have 2 user accounts on the pc Could be worth looking for but not essential Still can't find it Did you use it? a) to clean files b) to clean the registry c) was there a reason for this? used it to clean registry and files I was told it would increase the speed of the computer by getting rid of old files etc This starts to point towards Malware, do you have any antivirus/spyware programs and which ones? Yes we have panda 2009 antivirus/spyware Could this be a result of your Kids Messing and deleting the icons? or changing settings? They have not deleted icons but could have changed settings on the mouse and themes It might also help if you could tell us the make and model of your router and network card The router is a Belkin 54g with a matching belkin pci slot card If you can answer these questions as accurately as possible we should be able to get you back into the happy campers club :) I hope you can help http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/images/icons/icon12.gif Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 From your initial post and your answers there are 2 issues that stand out. 1. Registry corruption 2. Malware infection The AFT Cleaner is a great program for cleaning things out of your browsers and temp files but, like all registry cleaners and editors it can be very dangerous if not used by someone who can look and be aware of exactly what is being altered in the registry. I would suggest that you try a system restore back to just before you "cleaned"your registry and see how things stand. As for malware, I have seen mixed reviews for Panda 2008 and none as yet for 2009. With kids using a PC there is more than an even chance that something has got in there. But try the restore first and we will go from there. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Tootech Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 no networks are available under Network ConnectionsDo you mean that if you go to the Control Panel, then in to Network Connections, there are no LAN connections shown? Or.... Do you mean that if you look at the Wireless Networks available, you cannot see your network? Its an important question, please have a look and if you are not sure, then post back. Quote

raters Posted March 30, 2009 Author Posted March 30, 2009 Hi I have looked at network connections and lan settings There are no networks listed anywhere. I have also tried to do a system reload to an earlier date all to no avail I hope i have not caused too much mayhem answering the questions but my answers are all detailed but perhaps not in the correct place:o Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 There are no networks listed anywhere. I have also tried to do a system reload to an earlier date all to no avail Losing restore points is often another symptom of a malware infection, therefore it is important the we know exactly what you mean. Are you saying that you did a system restore to before you used the "cleaner"and it didn't solve the problem or that you were unable to do a system restore at all? "To no avail"can mean anything and it is a very important distinction. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain

Although there are restore points available before I used the cleaner they will not restore therefore I cannot restore from any point before after or in between I have tried all the restore points to absolutely no avail they will not work!! I have no networks showing anywhere in all the obvious places. Do you need to know anything else? As I have no apparent link with the internet by doing anything to repair the computer surely cannot hurt anything I just need some help instead of explaining everything i write. Please don,t be perdantic just give me some advice if only to go away!! This has been going on for far too long Quote
Match Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Hi Raters The quickest and fastest way to resolve this problem is for you to formate the C Drive and totally re-install windows. But you say you can't find the disks? and any data you don't have backed up will be lost !! and what we have been trying to ascertain is whether or not you have a hardware fault or a virus/malware problem. So as for now can you get into safe mode? If so try THIS Quote
RandyL Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 I would just like to add that a hardware issue may be at fault if you're lucky. However by all appearances you might have had an infection. Either way if you used Ccleaners registry aspect without a good working knowledge of the registry you could have corrupted the registry beyond repair. If that's so and System Restore fails to restore to the ponts you selected so far then your options are: 1. Try to restore via the method Match linked to above. 2. Find the disks 3. Obtain a new set of disks from the manufacturer. 4. Buy a retail set of XP disks. 5. Do a restore to factory condition from a partition on the hard drive if your computer has that option. What is the make, model and number of your PC. Number 3 and 5 depend on this information. Have you looked in Device Manager as Maynardvdm asked? On another note no one here is being pedantic. Exact, clear, detailed, complete etc. information is needed to get to the issues and offer solutions. Without that we would be doing little more then guessing. After reading through this thread again I can understand your frustration wanting to resolve this issue. Can you imagine our frustration trying to decipher answers or find them buried or having to fill in the blanks with missing or vague information? No one here has given up on you instead they are using great patience to try to assist you. Please try to help them by explaining so they can give you quality advice not just any old crap advice. I hope this issue gets resolved. Good luck. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. raters Posted April 9, 2009 Author Posted April 9, 2009 It Worked Hi Everyone I have been away for a few days but on my return I followed your instructions Match and I now have a computer again!! It would appear that the computer had been hit by 16 spywear viruses on the 16/03/09 which was the last time the computer functioned correctly. Everything is as it was and I am a very happy bunny again.
