Plastic Nev Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 For those who already have the newer gadgets such as the Iphone etc, plus those used to games machines in pubs and arcades it isn't new. However Microsoft are gearing up for Windows touch technology with both IE8 and the soon to be launched Windows 7. The coding needed is already in Internet Explorer 8, and is to be included in the new Windows 7. This all means that with the correct monitor built for the purpose, you will be able to interact with the screen by touching and even directly dragging and dropping to, for instance, organise your photo album, reorganise a word document or play games. The uses will be many, and although will not at first kick the mouse into the dustbin, it will inter react with it and the keyboard. As far as I understand it, the system uses a conductive grid or matrix embedded in the screen glass or front cover, and is sensitive to the changes in electrical field from your finger tips. Match Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Does it come with a self cleaning screen? sounds great but I have concerns about fingerprints making reading the screen difficult, so even if, at a price thats right me and my mouse are staying together. :D Quote

Someone will make a fortune if they create a small remote control device to do the touching for you. Perhaps a good idea would be to name it after a small animal to call attention to it. I'm using my computer all the time. 2. I'm bad enough using my computer with dirty hands. And now I have grandchildren. My grandson likes to use it while eating. 3. A mouse means I only have to move my hand within a one inch radius. Not twenty some inches. I'm old how much effort must I use? 4. Will these new monitors cost more just to satisfy Microsoft? 5. What about games? The mouse will never die. Or is that famous last words? Although Microsoft might be thinking that touch screen is the way to go I don't think going completely mouseless is a viable option. A mouse has many functions especially for the mobility impaired. Should they attempt to go completely mouseless civil liberty advocates would be up in arms. And I agree. In an office environment it might be usefull if and only if the mouse remains an option. The same goes for home users for reasons I already stated. As an option fine. As a mandate Microsoft might find themselves making the worst decision ever. Liability and user alienation issues abound. DirtyPolo Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 I don't see what all the hype is about anyway, you can use windows on a touch screen now, all it does it put a "Mouse click" where you touch it, so I don't see the difference except maybe one or two features specially for touch screening, such as the iPhone's zoom function etc. It's nothing new but microsoft are trying to make it more complicated. As long as they leave choices it's not an issue. I'm sure that Microsoft would never do anything that is not in the best interest of Windows users just to attempt to gain market share. Innovations are a fundamental good business plan as long as it is what people want. Any home user want a touch screen? I'm interested in knowing so speak up. Match Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 I can see the potential for replacing the mouse mat on a laptop if combined with a stylus in much the same way as a Nintendo DS, and I suppose for a receptionist using a pen or pencil then it would have a use there as well. and then after it makes it's way into the office, people will get used to it and then it will move to home PC's but I don't see it killing off the mouse just becoming an alternative. Once the price is affordable, I would be tempted, after all, these things will be on display in the shops, so you can give it a try anyway. One benefit I can see would be the on screen keyboard!! Actually... a friend of my fiance's built a touch screen into the arm of his easy chair in order to scroll through his collection of movies and select the one he wanted to watch on TV.... touch the screen and it would play on the TV. In the preschool I worked at... I had a student that was autistic.. and the only way he could use a computer was with a touch screen. This was about 6 years ago. Smart kids.. but did not have the physical ability to use the mouse. I myself want to turn my house into a smart house... I want touch screens. But not on the computer itself. Although I could see the benefits of having a touch screen for programs like photoshop. One thing that I would want as a conversation piece.. is this...
