jamesbrown Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Dear All, I have a home built PC which is only a few months old. It has been working well until now. I was playing a CD through media player, and then suddenly the screen froze, and a defening sound (quite undescribable) came blasting through the speakers. It was like a scratching squeaky sound. The mouse would not react and neither would the keyboard, the only thing to do in those situations is to press the reset button which is very anoying. I thought nothing of it the first time but it's happened twice now. What could be the cause of this problem? I don't have a sound card (i used the motherboard's built in one) I run a Nvidia GeForce 9800GT, 6GB RAM, and a GIGABYTE dynamic energy saver motherboard. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. James. Quote
help4me Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Try cleaning the computer with a can of compressed air. Was it the same CD? What media player are you using? Have you tried using a different media player? What else were you doing with the computer while listening to music when this screetching occured? It might be the drive that's gone bad... try the following If it only happens when listening to CD's.... try connecting the drive to another port on the motherboard. If you have another cable.. try using a different cable to connect to the mother board. Also try using another drive if you have a spare. jamesbrown Posted March 28, 2009 Author Posted March 28, 2009 . I've tryed using different CDs, and i've tryed using a different player which had no effect. I also tryed using a different drive. This exact same problem doesn't happen doing other tasks, but the whole system does crash every now and again. I'm in a slightly sticky situation, because i use this PC in a place where there is no internet connection. Could this be a virus? How do i connect my pc (desktop) to the internet through the wireless card of my laptop? Thanks, p.s. could this be a motherboard issue, because when the whole system crashes, the mouse (USB) laser light goes off. Quote
help4me Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 This might be an overheating issue... your video card might be causing the problem (highly unlikely, but possible). If you have the option... remove the video card (if you have one) and use onboard video. IF this fixes the screeching problem... it's the video card. Otherwise I am leaning toward a motherboard issue. Quote Intel Pentium Dual Core 2.6 GHz6GB RAM500 GB HDDIntel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 with 128MB dedicated memory Computer acting up? jamesbrown Posted March 28, 2009 Author Posted March 28, 2009 card My motherboard doesn't have onboard graphics. I think that it might be a motherboard issue. I don't think that its the graphics card because i've recently had it replaced, and the problems i was experiencing before were different to the ones i have now. I don't think this is an overheating issue either because the whole system seems pretty cool. the CPU temp is around 38degrees C, and i have a huge fan on the front of the case, another on the back and another on the side. The GPU has it's own fan and so does the CPU. To conclude, i doupt that this is a heat issue Any other suggestions to any possible cause of this problem would be greatly appreciated. James. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Like help4me, I am thinking possible mother board, or a little unlikely perhaps, but also power supply. If you have access to another power supply without it costing you anything, I would try a swap just to rule it out. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. jamesbrown Posted March 29, 2009 Author Posted March 29, 2009 ok will try that. It happened again today. does RAM cause this kind of problem? because my most recent upgrade was RAM. I will also try to replace the ribbon cable connecting the two DVDRW to the motherboard. will update the latest news on the problem to anyone reading this. Quote
Match Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Hi Jamesbrown TBH I think this is a new problem all together, well I've never heard of anything like it before. But as far as I am aware the info is read from the disk, into a buffer, which I believe is in the ram before being passed onto the sound processing section, of the motherboard, and finally output. (If I'm wrong on this please feel free to enlighten me). So it could be anything from the CPU, Motherboard, PSU, RAM, or maybe even a faulty fan (If there is a fault in the motor then there is no reason why it couldn't produce noise which if its finding its way into the Motherboard circuitry would create all sorts of problems. again if anyone can prove me wrong on this enlighten me). So I think that it is down to a process of elimination, but after ruling out the PSU then I would certainly put the RAM next inline for being the culprit thats causing the problem. Quote
jamesbrown Posted March 29, 2009 Author Posted March 29, 2009 ok Thanks to everyone who posted here. I've got news and this could help anyone who has the problem in the future. It could either be the RAM, or the fact that i installed open office. I did a system restore, and then remove 2GB a RAM that i recently upgraded. I still have 4GV left so i'm fine as far as RAM goes. The problem doesn't seem to have happened since, but i'm not gonna tempt fate. What i'd recomend to anyone who has this in the future, would be to uninstall the most recent software change. then remove the most recent hardware upgrade. Doing that seems to have solved the issue :) :) thankyou everyone! James.:):):):) Quote
Match Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Just a suggestion but you could re-install open office and if the problem re-occurs just simply uninstall it again and put your RAM Back in. If it don't happen again then you know its the RAM and you still have open office installed and 2 GIG of RAM for sale :) Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Have you checked that your MOBO actually accepts more than 4GB of RAM, the fact that you are using 2x2GB sticks does not mean that its meant to take more than 4GB of RAM, the chipset can normally handle 4GB of ram in any configuration but if you overstep the mark, that may be causing you issues, as you are trying to use something your MOBO is not meant to have in place if that makes sense.
