recently, everytime i start up my toshiba laptop a mini window appears and states that the delivery manager has stopped working.

yesterday i had to start in safe mode before restarting normally again. i get the feeling that all is not well with the machine.

one other point maybe relevant is that on start up it occasional asks for me to search for the drivers for an unknown printer. i do have a wireless printer set up which most times does work.

the machine is a toshiba sat pro a210, vista premium, 2gb ram, 160 gb hdd, amd athlon x2.

Delivery manager is apparently a product of Kontiki, Inc which is responsible for much of the UKs delivery of media streaming such as Sky TV on line services. If you have any of these programs installed I would suggest that you disable or uninstall them and see if the problem goes away. In any event they should be disabled from startup in your msconfig.

cheers beeceebee, i tried a sky program ages ago but it never worked and i uninstalled it.

kontiki is not listed in add/remove or start, all programs.

i found it listed when i searched my c drive but it will not let me delete it.

Try going to msconfig (Just type it in the run box from your start menu.) Look to see if kontiki or Delivery manager are listed in the startup tab. If they are, disable them and and restart your computer. You should be able to delete the kontiki files at that point. (Assuming you found them in startup.)

got it disabled in msconfig and have restarted.

it still does not show anywhere except when i go to c drive, right click, explore programs and when i select delete, i'm told i need permission to perform this action.

i am the administrator and just to be certain i've just checked in control panel user accounts.

i'm there as administrator and the guest is off. there are no other users.

I do not have Vista but, unlike XP, you must actually elect to perform certain tasks as an administrator even if you have administrative rights. That, I believe, includes removing program files such as these.

If you are on an administrator account and you try to delete something from the program files, it normally tells you that you need permission then the UAC window will pop up either asking for your password or the password for an account with administrator rights.

If no window of that description pops up at all, what does the message say exactly when you try delete it? that you don't have permission, or what? what is the exact wording of the error.

Thanks.

i think i have uac turned off.

one other thing is that i do not have any recycle bin icon on my desktop.

i've always wondered why this is but it really never bothered me much.

but perhaps it is related as when i try to delete the kontiki file it says "are you sure you want to move the folder to the recycle bin".

then a box entitled "destination access folder denied" states "you need permission to perform this action".

To get your Recycle Bin back try the following steps:

- Right click on your desktop,

- Click on "Personalise"

- In the window that opens up, on the left under "Tasks" click on "Change Desktop Icons"

- Another window will appear, check to see that "Recycle Bin" is ticked.

Try the following on the file/folder that wont delete:

- Right click on file

- Click "Properties"

- Click "Security"

- Click "Advanced"

- Click "Owner" in top tabs

- Click "Edit"

- Highlight the user you want and click "apply"/"ok"

Now try to delete it again.

This sounds like a problem I once had, and I'm sure RandyL if browsing through this thread will agree as he assited me for a while trying to correct it.

I had a program folder that would not let me delete it, it said I didn't have permission etc.

It did not appear in the Add/Remove programs list.

My only way to remove it was to do a System Restore to an earlier time and uninstall it properly again, this rectified the problem.

I would hope we can find an easier way to solve your issue but it looks like it's going towards a system restore.

Just remember that a system restore will undo any changes you made since the restore point you revert to.

This means any programs installed/uninstalled.

So a good thing is to try remember what programs you have installed recently, depending on how far back you want to restore to.

If you cant remeber exactly, check the Reliability and Performance Monitor (Reliability section) This notes any problems found with the system, any errors etc also any programs installed/uninstalled.

Before all that though, you can try Revo Uninstaller, this is an advanced uninstallation program, designed to completly uninstall programs from your system.

When you disabled the program in the startup tab in msconfig and exited and restarted you were unable to delete because of the administrator problem. I have a feeling that you have rebooted normally and it is right back in startup again. That would mean that it is running in the background.

Go pack to the directions on msconfig and see if you find it there again in start up. If you do disable it and apply and then exit. When your computer reboots you will get a notice box about a diagnostic mode. Check the box in the window. It will say something like do not run in diagnostic mode or show this window. (XP Version I am making an assumption about vista.)

Hopefully you will be able to delete it now. If it was not back in startup we will have to look further.

thanks for your patience guys.

i've tried the run msconfig instructions and it is still listed there but it is unticked.

there is no message or other reference after restart.

as regards doing a system restore - i have only recent restores saved as i followed all advised steps to check for adware, virus removal etc and step 5 is to remove all but 1 restore point.

i think i will have to try the uninstaller program.

Do you still get the error message at startup after unticking Kontiki and or Delivery Manager?

If not you might want to leave well enough alone.

I'm not familiar with the programs but some software actually installs more then one program and they work in conjunction with each other. If that's the case you may need to uninstall a different program that's related to it.

It might also be a related process running in task manager that is stopping you from deleting the file and the process or processes may need to be stopped first.

Either way I'm not a fan of manually deleting program files and folders because that might cause other issues if there is a dependancy such as shared dll files.

It sounds like the uninstaller for the program you uninstalled was poorly written and left remnants. If that's all that is left and you don't get the error anymore I would leave well enough alone.

If you still get the error you could try the uninstaller program but you might have to reinstall the program first to get it to work since you can't restore prior to the uninstallation.

cheers randy,

i don't any longer get the original error message and i feel you are quite right in advising to leave well enough alone. (it seems to me i do this often enough over the years - wonderful windows i guess).

i downloaded revo uninstaller and it did not find it either. then i tried to drop it into a particular part of revo and have somehow lost it altogether!

as you say if its not now showing the original error message and things are running fairly well normal, then i should really drop my concerns. besides i got my recycle bin restored too.

thanks again to all for all the help and patience.
