Hi All

My Dell Inspiron 2200 Laptop which i bought as a non-working example, is now up and running, but has one problem. When you boot up the screen stays blank and does not show the Dell Logo or the initial Windows start up screen. It does come on at the point when the cursor would appear and then display shows as normal. I have tried an alternative display screen which I know is good, but again it stays blank until the point mentioned above.

If I connect to a seperate monitor, the display starts from boot up without problem.

I am not all that clear on what you are telling us. Are you saying that you see a normal boot sequence in a separate monitor? Dell screen, windows loading window etc but on the laptop monitor it stays blank until windows loads?

It sounds to me, if I am reading what you are saying correctly is that your laptop is loading up correctly, and you hear the bootup sound etc, before the actual screen displays the image, is this right?

You can try updating the graphics drivers which will be on the Dell website, or you may have an issue with your monitor.

I have confusion over this statement.

I have tried an alternative display screen which I know is good, but again it stays blank until the point mentioned above.

If I connect to a seperate monitor, the display starts from boot up without problem.

Surely an alternate display screen and a separate monitor are one and the same?

What were the issues with it previous to buying it as a "non working example"?

Hi

The alternative display screen in my case meant a spare Dell Laptop screen. The seperate monitor used, was my PCs monitor which I connected to the laptop by way of a rear port.

It was a non-functioning laptop due to a blown chip located near to the AC input connector

Hope this clarifies the situation.

Nb. The display has now failed completly on the laptop screen, but output is fine on external monitor.

Hi

That is correct, but I have tried downloading the drivers from Dell, but it has made no difference. At this time, the display output to the laptop screen has failed completly, but output to an external screen via the rear port is fine.

Looks like a motherboard issue ?

Hi

This sounds like a hardware problem and you need to replace the screen. Or check the connection between the screen and the laptop and make sure its secure.

Hi

It stays blank until the windows welcome logo appears and then displays normaly, however it now will not display anything. Connecting to an external screen via the output port on the rear of the laptop shows the display working correctly.

Ok if i understand this correctly you have 2 laptop screens and now neither one works at all. If you connect a monitor to the vga port it works fine. Correct?

How did you connect the spare laptop screen? If I am reading this right and you actually replaced the old screen with one you know to be working then the obvious answer lies either with the cable (if you used the same one) or the connection itself. If you used the same cable then try a new one. In any event it may be something that can only be solved by having someone take it apart and look at it.

Again, that assumes that I am reading this correctly.

So you are saying that you are actually swapping the laptop screens over - not a job for the inexperienced, so either you know what you are doing or more worryingly you dont.

If its the latter then you could have stretched the cable that connects the screen to the base unit, and if thats the case you better return it to DELL if you have any warranty.

Regardless of which way you look at your post - External monitors work, and your original one and spare one don't.
