If all that is wrong with the laptop is a broken screen, you are best of borrowing a monitor and attaching it to the laptop. The problem there may be setting the laptop to recognise the monitor if you cant see the screen. Unfortunately it is not plug and play.

You would have a similar problem trying to network the two machines.

If the laptop is going into the bin, you are probably best off getting a USB caddy and removing the hard drive. That way you can simply plug it into the usb port of the second machine and move the data off it. That will also give you an external Hard drive to remember the old machine by. :)

All that being said, one of our hardware experts will tell you if there is a simple way to do what you would like. I would not hold out much hope for that but will wait and learn with you.

I am not skilled with laptops, but I would say that you cannot connect the two and laptops tend to only have visual outputs on them and not inputs and they have their own screen.

I think BeeCeeBee's advice is best and to hook it up to another monitor, and get a drive caddy which will allow you to take the Hard drive out and connect it to your other machine via USB, and transfer your stuff across.

Attach the monitor before booting the lappy - it should come on straight away.

If it doesn't, look around on your keyboard, there is a Function key normally that will swap you over from laptop display to external display.

Hi, two things from me, first I agree about the external monitor, and it should only be an external monitor, another laptop could only be connected as a network and you need both screens functioning to do that.

The next point being, firstly, are you sure it is the screen itself duff and not a fault in the graphics section of the mother board, either driver fault or worse.

secondly, If it is definitely the screen, have you looked at the possibility of replacing it? Although it is a task for a technician as they are extremely difficult to actually do unless you know how, it may still not cost too much to have it done.

I know I said two things, so here is a third, (I am like that, think of something else halfway through ;) ) which is to go down the route of removing the hard drive and by using the correct sized caddy, use it as an external hard drive with the working machine.

Nev.
