ok i have windows xp. i run it on an hp laptop. my problem is that i have 2 user acounts on my pc one is just a guest login with limited access and the other one is the login my husband and I use. a few days ago after he had been on this privacy center alert started coming up as soon as we login. it comes up it acts like it is scaning our pc and then when it finely closes all we can get is the desktop pic. the guest login works ok but i can't gain access to any of my files and i am unable to change any settings or even download a vs to try to fix the problem. can you help me to atleast access my files and settings?? and maybe even remove this privacy center thing?

Please Help me!

Ok

When did you first encounter this anomaly?

Do a System Restore to a previous point to the date this started happening and get back to us if all is still not good.

when I tried to do a restore i got the fallowing message, "You do not have sufficient security privilegs to restore your system. Please contact your administrator, or logout and log in again as administrator and try again" that would be fine if i could log in as administrator and be able to access system restore, but I can't even get to the start menu.

Is the account that you and your husband use, an administrator account?

You can check this by going to Contorl Panel, then to User Accounts, and check what yours is.

OK have you tried booting up into safe mode? I believe its tap the f8 key on the HP machines but unless you tell us the :- make and model its hard to check for sure.

but once in safe mode you should be able to do a system restore by :-

1.

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.

2.

On the Welcome screen, click Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.

3.

On the Select a Restore Point page, select the date from the calendar that shows the point you'd like to restore to and then click Next. (Pick a point when you know things were working ok )

Yes my account is an administrator account, Yes i tried starting up in safe mode and still got the same thing. oh and did i mention that this only happens when i log in to the my account? I can log into the guest log in and it works just fine. The problem with it is that no matter what i try to do i get the message saying i do not have the security privileges to do it. about all its good for is surfing the web. what next? I have also tried using the disk and doing a repair to my system. would it work to boot up from the disk ? would that maybe bypass that privacy center stuff and allow me to give the other admin privilages?

Okay, log into your account, and create another User account with admin privilages.

Then log onto that account and try the restore from there.
