SMTP Error - smtp;551 Bad Recipient

Windows 2003 server, nothing obvious has changed but recently we get random

bad mails, ie mails to the same recipient are sometimes OK, sometimes

rejected. The error is something like this:

Delivery to the following recipients failed.

 

ewilliams@ofec.co.uk

 

--9B095B5ADSN=_01C82B806FE70FE2000000E4www.ofec.co.uk

Content-Type: message/delivery-status

 

Reporting-MTA: dns;http://www.ofec.co.uk

Received-From-MTA: dns;ofec

Arrival-Date: Tue, 4 Dec 2007 15:18:49 +0000

 

Final-Recipient: rfc822;ewilliams@ofec.co.uk

Action: failed

Status: 5.5.0

Diagnostic-Code: smtp;551 Bad Recipient

 

I've trawled Google quite hard for help but nothing seems to be around.

Hi Morpheus,

 

Did you make any progress with this? We're having exactly the same problems

with some emails failing / some working, with same error code.

Hi Simon, no, I found http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=323350 and get the

error here too, I've just decided to use a Microsoft Support Incident on this

so I'll let you know how it goes.

RE: SMTP Error - smtp;551 Bad Recipient

 

There were other (non MS) SMTP services running on ours - our server provider

installs them. They were previously disabled, but had somehow started running

again and in the SMTP logs looked to be interfering again. I've disabled

these and will see how it goes. Is there anything similarly odd in your SMTP

logs - worth a go!
