Sobeit Posted April 2, 2009 Author Posted April 2, 2009 Hi both, thanks for the replies. I remember checking drivers a bit back and i think there was an update for the graphics but as it 'aint broke' i didn't fix it, now something is broke. I have two sticks of RAM which i checked and reseated a week or so ago so i could try one stick. As for changing anything, not as far as i can remember, but you know what it's like......... So, which to try first? Also, say it is a driver error or a RAM problem, can either of these throw up random BSOD's? Cheers. BTW, just what is the best course for updating drivers, go to the manufacturers site or use a util or windows update or................ Use them, expect grief!!

Sobeit Posted April 2, 2009 Author Posted April 2, 2009 Hmmm, got problems here. Downloaded the new driver (182.50 geforce winxp32bit NVIDIA Corporation ) to my desktop. I uninstalled the old display drivers from add remove (i had a box pop up and chose 'remove display drivers only') was this correct? Restarted my comp as instructed. Double clicked the driver icon, it said it had installed it. Rebooted, it is still as if there is no driver installed and when i look in device manager i have a yellow exclamation next to my display adapter?? Use them, expect grief!!
maynardvdm Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Try re-installing the driver. Just make sure you downloaded the correct one for your graphic card. We are all members helping other members. Sobeit Posted April 2, 2009 Author Posted April 2, 2009 Just checking again on the nvidia site. I used their scan option to tell me which i needed, perhaps this was a mistake? Use them, expect grief!!
Sobeit Posted April 2, 2009 Author Posted April 2, 2009 Well, there you go, never trust a manufacturers website. They scanned my computer and gave me the wrong driver. All appears ok now, i shall plug my scanner back in and see how we go. I have a sneaking suspision that 'i'll be back'!! Cheers Use them, expect grief!!
Sobeit Posted April 2, 2009 Author Posted April 2, 2009 Plugged the scanner back in, no start up noise, opened 'my computer', the scanner booted up? Why is the scanner associated with things like my computer and other things that are nothing to do with it? Cheers. Use them, expect grief!!

Sobeit Posted April 2, 2009 Author Posted April 2, 2009 Yes, it's just a scanner and no i don't see an icon appear. It doesn't just start when i open 'my computer' i just tried it now, i opened nero start smart, clicked to add a video file and yo, the scanner buzzed into life, it doesn't open a page onto my screen it just gets ready to roll. Things are getting stranger and it appears that it is hard to find the problem, no one knows the answer but it is a computer so............... Hey, i've just looked in 'my computer' and there are two DVD drives that i don't possess?? I unplugged the scanner and they are still there, i unplugged my usb hub, they are still there, how can this be and where have they come from?? Too many weird things going on here. Use them, expect grief!!
BeeCeeBee Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 i've just looked in 'my computer' and there are two DVD drives that i don't possess?? How many cd/dvd drives do you have? Assuming 1 does that mean you are showing 2 extra or 1 extra drive? We know that they (or it) shows up in "My Computer" but what does it show in Device Manager? If it shows more than what it should show are they all the same? When your scanner is attached does it show in your control panel under "Cameras and Scanners?" Sobeit Posted April 2, 2009 Author Posted April 2, 2009 (edited) Deleted the extra dvd players from device manager, one was a virtual drive and lordy knows what the other was but they have gone. I have two drives now, as it should be. As for the scanner, i can't find that anywhere. It isn't in device manger and when i look in cameras and scanners via control panel the cupboard is bare??? Ha ha ha, my mistake, i hadn't plugged the stupid thing back in, NOW when i look in cameras and scanners the scanner is there!! BTW, when i just plugged it back in, that is the first time today that it started up when it should do. Edited April 2, 2009 by Sobeit Use them, expect grief!!
BeeCeeBee Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Too many weird things going on here. I tend to agree and am beginning to wonder if this is a driver or hardware issue at all. Virtual drives do not just appear and hardware does not just disappear and then reappear when it feels like it. I believe that your machine may be infected with something but we really need to know how you are using it. If, for example, you are using p2p programs and that is why you had a virtual drive, that could be a cause. There must be a program capable of creating a virtual drive (daemon tools, etc.) some of these are ok if you get them from the right site but are often added on to dodgy downloads. Maybe it is hardware and drivers but there is no point in everyone running around like chickens if there is something more we should know. "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Sobeit Posted April 2, 2009 Author Posted April 2, 2009 It was a Magic ISO virtual drive which i must have added accidentaly. I have p2p'd for years and am very careful how i use them and always check files before opening. I know there is a possible danger of infection and that is why i run a check at least once a week, i'm using Advanced System Care at the mo but i do wonder wether all this registry cleaning etc is good for computers. I'm checking processes at the mo to see if there is anything untoward lurking in the background. Do you know of a good site for checking what is what? Most of them tell you a bit then try to get you to buy something. I don't know what you mean by hardware disappearing?? it was only the scanner and i wrote that that was my mistake, i hadn't plugged it in. If worse comes to worse i will have to format, it has been several years since i built this thing and it may be time for a clear out. Use them, expect grief!!
BeeCeeBee Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 We have a very strict policy about p2p and have often closed and locked threads as a result. http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/malware-removal-av-firewalls-etc/5533-free-pc-help-p2p-policy.html#post39692 Despite what you believe you are probably going down a dangerous road. We will not help you with any p2p issues except to guide you in removal. Normally we will just close a thread where p2p is involved but I feel I lured you into this and you deserve a bit more than that. i'm using Advanced System Care at the mo but i do wonder wether all this registry cleaning etc is good for computers. We also have had numerous discussions and problems regarding registry editors and cleaners. They are dangerous in the hands of the unwary user and the most dangerous of all are the ones that wind up asking for money. There is more than a little probability that your problem was created by their use. Formatting will certainly resolve your problem and we can help you with that as it will remove your p2p programs. We can suggest a means to attempt to disinfect your pc but that will also require you to uninstall all p2p programs. Im afraid that is as much advice as we can give you. If you need help in formatting please ask in a new thread. "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Sobeit Posted April 2, 2009 Author Posted April 2, 2009 We have a very strict policy about p2p and have often closed and locked threads as a result. I suggest you read the rules yourself. I haven't asked for any help whatsoever regarding p2p. It is you that brought up the subject. Normally we will just close a thread where p2p is involved but I feel I lured you into this and you deserve a bit more than that. I think it is a shame that you feel the need to point out (twice) that threads have been closed due to requests about p2p, i read the rules and was prepared to abide by them. but I feel I lured you into this and you deserve a bit more than that. Please don't feel that i deserve anything, i have nothing to hide and how i use p2p is up to me, be it to put my large collection of vinyl to cd (much easier than transfering via a usb turntable) or download the many legal podcasts and talking books available. Yes you can argue that in using p2p, even legally, is keeping the networks going, the problem is, they will never be stopped, it is the future and until we all embrace it the pirates will have a place to hawk their wares. Opportunity missed. (so far). We can suggest a means to attempt to disinfect your pc but that will also require you to uninstall all p2p programs. Im afraid that is as much advice as we can give you Hmmm, a type of blackmail, you stop using p2p, we will help, otherwise bye bye. I will never stop using p2p as it is perfectly legal, it is a sad world where people shy away from the inevitable. Thanks for the help i was given anyway. Cheers. Use them, expect grief!!
DirtyPolo Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 (edited) I suggest you read the rules yourself. This is a very rude statment to make to someone that is taking their own time out to try to help you resolve a problem. I haven't asked for any help whatsoever regarding p2p. It is you that brought up the subject. We know and understand this, that is exactly why BeeCeeBee stated that he feels he lured you into giving those details and will therefore not take any actions against them. I think it is a shame that you feel the need to point out (twice) that threads have been closed due to requests about p2p, i read the rules and was prepared to abide by them. There is no doubt that you were prepared to abide by the rules, but the reason why we reinforce the fact that threads get closed for P2P involvement is because of the increasing number of members who have asked for assistance that has involved illegal use of P2P software so we try to make sure that everyone involved in P2P, legal or illegal, understands the consequences of asking for help regarding them and due to the nature of most P2P users to be illegal we cannot offer help incolving such programs. Please don't feel that i deserve anything, i have nothing to hide and how i use p2p is up to me, be it to put my large collection of vinyl to cd (much easier than transfering via a usb turntable) or download the many legal podcasts and talking books available.BeeCeeBee was simply stating that he feels that he lured you into this situation and therefore letting you know, after telling you what the normal procedure was, that this shall not be taken as there is no evidence of illegal use and that the assistance asked for does not require these progams. Yes you can argue that in using p2p, even legally, is keeping the networks going, the problem is, they will never be stopped, it is the future and until we all embrace it the pirates will have a place to hawk their wares. Opportunity missed. (so far).We are not saying that all P2P usage should be stopped as, yes, it is perfectly legal in itself, but as everyone knows, the software is mainly used for illegal actions and as a website offering legitimate help for computer issues we cannot allow our services to be given out to solve problems that were caused by, or involve illegal use of these programs, whilst they remain on the system. But as already stated, unfortunatly the majority of P2P users do not use such software for legal actions. We are not trying to stop P2P use as many large companies also use P2P for perfectly legal things. Hmmm, a type of blackmail, you stop using p2p, we will help, otherwise bye bye. I will never stop using p2p as it is perfectly legal, it is a sad world where people shy away from the inevitable. Thanks for the help i was given anyway. Cheers. We are not saying that in order to continue receiving our help, you must get rid of all your P2P programs, but that they have in the past, been a source of many problems, and sometimes/most of the times, removing of these programs have aided the solving of the problems. What a user does, after our help is done and their problem fixed, is upto them. We can only suggest the best way to keep a PC clean, safe and healthy, and this includes keeping it clean of P2P software. BeeCeeBee Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Philosophical discussions about p2p are all very nice but we are here to help our members solve problems and avoid future problems. I appreciate that you read the rules and carefully avoided running afoul of them. While that is all very nice it meant that 20+ posts went by before we learned of virtual drives appearing out of nowhere and the use of registry cleaners and p2p. In the end my bet is with the registry cleaner but it may yet be the p2p. What I do not believe is that it is your hardware or your drivers although they may have been effected. We continued to treat you and your problem with respect but you chose not to read between the lines and opted for righteous indignation. If it makes you feel any better my first thread on Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help was closed and locked. As is this one. "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
