Lets start with the basics, can you read any disks at all? DVDs and CDs use different components to read data. It is important to know if it is the entire drive or just one of its functions.

Hi

Also check this:

Check Device Manager:

  • Right-Click My Computer and select Properties
  • Click on the Hardware Tab and click on Device Manager
  • Is there any yellow ! or red x by the CD\DVD drives?

ok so the drive will not read anything no Cd's no dvd's no cdroms or dvdroms nothing! it used to auto run disc's and it dosn't do that all it say when you click on the drive is"insert a disc" please insert a dice into e drive and then it ejects the disc!

i have been to device manager and the dvd drive is fine it say it's running properly and it not yellow!

i have tryed to restore my sytem but the restore points don't fix it!

Can you see your drive in My Computer?

Also, will it read original discs - say like a shop bought CD or DVD?

Try going to Device Manager and uninstalling the drive. Reboot (it will be reinstalled) and try again.

If there are no yellow question or exclamation marks against the drive, and you can see it in My Computer, but it won't read anything, I'd say it is faulty and needs replacing.

Windows would normally pick the disk drive up when it boots if there are no drivers installed - return it if under warranty
