Hi there

I am starting to receive emails where pictures should be included. Instead I have a blank (where the picture should be) with a red cross in the corner. I run Window XP Home Edition with Outlook Express 6. I generally have solved this problem by freeing-up more memory but it is not working now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help.

Does this happen to all e-mails or only from untrusted sources?

Have a look here:

Images are blocked when you open an e-mail message in Outlook Express on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer

Hi Silver;

The solution Maynardvdm offered is still a viable one. Check your settings to see if they need changed as the article suggests.

SP2 changed that setting automatically in Outlook Express 6. That is the version you have It's still the same with SP3. SP3 just rolled up later updates and combined them with SP2.

Also can you please answer Maynard Does this happen to all e-mails or only from untrusted sources?

It could be the HTML setting in the security tab of OE6 or an untrusted source issue is why he asks.

Try what's been suggested. If that doesn't work we'll look for something else.

And in case anyone else reads this the Windows Mail that replaces OE in Vista has the same functions and settings on this matter.

Hi there Randyl

Firstly, I assumed that because when I went to Tools there are no options other than "Message" or "Add to Message Book", whereas the suggested solution indicates I should have an "Options" possibility. I therefore assumed that it was unsuitable for my set up.

Secondly, to answer Maynard's question, it does not happen to all emails and where it does not happen (where red cross appears) I can be sure they are coming from a trusted source.

Thank you for your help but, unfortunately, I have not yet resolved this problem.

Hi

At the top you should see Tools and the Options at the bottom, like this:

This is the security tab RandyL mentioned:

Hi

Unfortunately I do not have the options under "Tools" that are shown in your screenshot. All I have is "Message" or "Add to Message Book" when I click on "Tools". Is there some other way of accessing the "Options" tab? Just to confirm I am running Window XP (SP3) with Outlook Express 6.

Ok. Dont know if this will make a difference but:

Go to Control Panel and select Internet Options

Click on Advanced Tab

Under the Multimedia section Place a tick in the Show Pictures box.

This is the Tools in the message window. Click on Tools in the Main Outlook window, then you'll see the options.

My apologies - finger trouble!

I appreciate the time and effort you are giving to resolving my problem but I have now tried both suggestions but to no avail. Since I have successfully made the changes you suggested should i expect the (old) emails with the red cross to now display the image? I have not received any new email with images included so cannot check whether it would only be effective for emails received after the changes.

Many thanks

OK there are other possibilities as to why this is happening.

Did you click Apply and OK when making the changes?

It could be that the picture placeholder is from an inline HTML link.

If this is the case the url may no longer exist thus no picture.

It could be a firewall or HOSTS file that is blocking the picture url site.

You also need to be connected to the internet.

You could also try changing your Internet Explore Options security level to default.

If it's just a simple picture like a jpeg and not an inline link then the sender has to do two things for it to send the picture if they are using OE..

1. Sender has to be sending in HTML format.

2. Senders HTML settings have to be Send pictures with messages.

Also any images sent have to images saved in RBG.

Locate a jpeg image and email it to yourself and see what happens.
