Hi there URGENT help needed please. My PC has a major crash problem. I have been using vista on my latop, but wanted to use my desktop to setup wireless as we have just recently gone on the internet and wanted to not be 'hardwired' into the laptop from the modem, and wanted to online a console from the same network. As I had been using my laptop my desktop hadn't been used for a while as it is older and not as good and on XP.

So I went to the PC, turned it on & it crashed after trying to load. After many attempts & checking wires etc I came to this site. I followed instructions for a post that was called graphics card crashes my pc, taking card out, then RaM etc. It then worked great as we plugged it all back in and turned it on.

I proceeded to install my wireless router, started off with no problems. Got as far as putting network name & password and the PC went onto a big blue screen, saying something about an error, a message I have never seen before and was too quick for me to even read a tiny part.

Now I did the usual restart etc and it is still doing the same thing just after I get to my desktop screen, off it goes, blue message and then restart. And I am very sorry to say I am a complete and utter novice when it comes to PC's. My desktop was from new and already set up and same with my laptop so haven't had to do a thing. BIG SORRY! LOL And sorry for this war & peace, I'm new to all this and trying to give as much info as possible. I'm on a Packard bell i media PC on xp home. Please could someone help me as I am stuck without it .........:(

Hi

First thing Right-Click My Computer and select Properties, then Click on the Advanced Tab

Then Click on Settings Under the heading Startup and Recovery and untick Automatically Restart

http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn297/Mjfreepchelp/startrec1.png

If you can't do this in normal mode, do it in safe mode.

Start your computer in Safe Mode.

  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again. If F8 doesn't work try F5.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Log on with an account that has administrator priviledges, usually your own account (NOT the account named Administrator).

Now you will be able to see the error message.

Also how often does it happen?

Could you tell us what the specs are for that pc (Mobo, CPU, RAM).

Hi, thanks for this I will start it in safe mode today and give it a try. As for the info about the PC I will have to get back to you I have it written down somewhere. I can tell you it's xp home sp2 and has a 72 HDD with secondary 350hdd and a TV tuner card and external drives etc. It has 2 sticks of memory, ill let you know later what type. Sorry I am hopeless I know but I will fill you in where possible. I didn't know the spec before it crashed and can't get onto it to find it out but did file the info. This is the first time ever it has happened, never had a problem before, it ran slow as not got a good processor speed and is old but it was fine, did it's job very well. Now it does the strange go to blue screen after desktop load, before I can even use it, it crashes half way through filing the system tray icons if that's any use to you? I do know it's got a motherboard tht won't take the new graphics cards etc it was brand new in 2001/2.

Hi there. I went to the PC, took the router etc off it before starting to turn it on. I knew it wasn't he router as a it is new and b it was faulty before I started to put it on, which is when I followed your post on this site for someone else (take out graphics card, ram etc) it worked OK so I started on the router etc.

Anyway, it came on and worked typically and strangely enough! SO I didn't need safe mode and thought great! I'll get what I can from here.

So I turned off auto restart as you suggested (thank you for that) and read the error report. I do keep getting the error report pop ups and can't send them as I am not on the net with it.

SO I also got the info about the actual PC while I was there. And here it is -

ACPI Uniprocessor PC, Intel Celeron CPU 2.20Ghz

Display adapter NVIDIA GeForce4 MX420

736mb of RAM????? sorry it's all it says, not type etc

AND the error report was as follows -

error signature (windows error report)

BCCode 10000050

BCP1 E3697000

BCP2 00000001

BCP3 8057BEQA

BCP4 00000001

OS ver 5_1_2600

sp 2_0

product 768_1

OK, sorry about the info and I realize it's probably a case of 'too much info' lol but I thought best to put what I could as I am not sure.

Sorry about this, I did say I was a complete novice and my PC is outdated I know. I am only really wanting it for data storage and running my network as I have a laptop for the rest. I do love the PC but if there's nothing I can do with it then so be it, shame but these things do happen and I can't get a new one so I'll make do like people do. I don;t suppose it;s any help but I do have a brand new graphics card I got to put in it, apparently my motherboard won't take it though so I guess it isn't any good LOL

Thanks for this :)

Would you recommend.....

Hi again everyone, as my PC is so old and outdated (poor thing did great until recent), and as I have a couple of external HDD, would you suggest given my recent PC problems that I use my newer laptop to put my router through? If so is it possible to do? As in, is my laptop going to be good enough and as it is wireless enabled will it run a router for my home network wirelessly with no problems? Will I need to hardwire the router into the laptop or can it stay wireless I have a Medion professional PC notebook, 2 X 1 G sticks of ram ( DDR2 SODIMM PC2 ) Intel Celeron M 540@ 1.86, vista basic. Display adapter - VIA Chrome9 HC IGP Family WDDM, etc. It has nothing I have added other than the memory upgrade. Will it run the network OK? Will it be too much for it?

Let me know what you think please as we are currently plugging cables in and out of the laptop & 360 and resetting our modem each time, we can only use one at a time as we don't have our router set up yet due to my PC faults. Oh the notebook has a windows base score index of 2.6 at mo?

Thanks very much

Also, would I need to do anything else to the laptop to do this if it is possible?:)

It seems that others are involved in trying to help you fix your PC I am not going to comment on the progress. Far to much to read.:)

As for your laptop though, there is no reason not to get it up and running on your internet connection and you have the choice of both wireless and hard wired. No problem there.

I think you may have the concept a bit reversed. You do not run a router through a computer, you run a computer "through" a router in order to gain access to a remote server that provides internet access. Two or more computers can be attached to the same router.

So by all means use the laptop and continue to try to get to the bottom of your pc problems at the same time. There is no issue of having to choose one over the other.

Hi there maynardvdm, thanks for your reply & help, yep i can start it normally. Constantly pops up the error message shown above in post 4, thanks. But I haven't tried to do anything with it, I have fully backed up both internal drives onto my external one just in case. Cheers

Thanks RandyL I will try these things today and let you know if it works, I think it would make sense if it's my ram as my PC lists it's total RAM as less than it's actual? I will soon see I guess, thanks.

Hi there, I have run the checks etc and still have a problem with error popup. I am going to just reformat the PC and start again from scratch, including removing my 2nd internal HDD etc. I have backed everything up already so hope it solves the problem, thanks for the help anyway guys :)
