ahamilton Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Hi people... I have a photo i took a couple years ago which i recently decided i'd like to get printed. I clicked on the thumbnail which looked (and still looks) fine, but the enlarged image is covered by a pale shade of white on about 8/10ths of the photo, leaving a band of the original colour at the top. Is there any way of getting the photo back to it's original glory? Thanks for any help i appreciate what you guys are doing here. Quote
Tootech Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Hi, It sounds like the file is corrupt in some way. Have you tried viewing it on another computer or with a different image viewing program? If it has been copied from another computer, or storage device to its current location the copying process could have corrupted it. The other thing I thought of is to do with your hard drive health. This type of problem comes up when recovering data from faulty hard disks. It's worth running a disk check to make sure everything is ok. Assuming your photo is stored on your C: drive, go to My Computer, then right click over the C: drive, down to Properties. Across to Tools, the Error Checking, click Check Now. Tick both boxes and Ok it. Windows will tell you it cannot do it now and ask if you want to schedule a check on system restart - say yes and reboot your PC. It will take a while - up to an hour or so. Have another look at your photo and let us know. Quote
ahamilton Posted April 9, 2009 Author Posted April 9, 2009 Hi Tootech, thanks for the quick response. I've tried viewing it with other applications, no luck that way. I'll run the scan thing you suggested then get back here, hope it works. Thanks =) Quote
RandyL Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 By all means follow Scotts advice and hope for the best. The alternative if the file is corrupted beyond repair is to get the photo restored by a photo restoration specialist much like you would a photo from olden times. You might be able to do it yourself with a combination of really expensive software programs, months of learning and days of restoring. A specialist would be cheaper but not cheap at all. ahamilton Posted April 9, 2009 Author Posted April 9, 2009 Hi Randy. No luck with the disk check unfortunately. I guess maybe it's fubar'd then! It's a bit frustrating as the thumbnail looks perfect, but as soon as i open it with a viewer its ruined =(! Thanks anyway guys, i'll look into the restoration thing but if it's as expensive as it sounds, i guess i'll have to let go of the picy! I appreciate the help and advice :) Quote

Goku Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 Hello Hamilton. There is some hope for you still. Have a look here. Sadly, the link could have helped you a lot if we had just been a bit early. If you really want to recover that photo and are prepared to try it by yourself, then you can try JPEG Snoop. If you don't mind, I can try to fix the photo using the program, but only if you are willing to send it to me. I will keep an eye out for any other such program that might help you out. :) Hope that helps. -- Goku Quote
