Hi I am using windows XP and I am having internet problems.

I am subcribed to tiscali broadband with speeds up to 8MB but am only getting 576.0 KB, at first I thought this was because of the area I live in but recently got a new router (for business use only) which is getting a speed of 8MB. Please can you tell me why it is so slow and what to do to make it faster.

Hi Doddy

Welcome to FPCH

Err I'm a bit confused, are you getting 8MB or not?

I'm a little confused by what you are telling us Doddy. Is this second router that is working well for you in the same location and using the same line? If so are there one or two ISP accounts?

Again, if you are talking about the same physical location, why do you need a separate router for business?

Tiscali may promise a net connection speed of 8MB but that depends on how far from the exchange you are mate.

The further away you are the less speed you get.

It may also be a landline issue, have you contacted BT to do a line check?

It may well be that the business line will be guaranteed to supply at 8MB at a cost substantially higher than your home connection, would this be the case?

There can be a number of reasons from filters down to the line quality. Unless you have download limit issues why not simply use the router that is getting the 8Mb connection. Routers do not store information. You can keep the two lines for telephone and fax use.

Am I missing something here?

Another thing is that a friend over the road has also got tiscali and has the same subscription (up to 8MB) and is getting 8MB but I am not

From the timing of these posts it appears that there may be a number of questions that are unanswered perhaps because you were posting at the time and may not have seen them.

Much of this is based on the assumption that you have two separate routers attached to two separate lines with two separate accounts. Is this correct?

Again, if you have an account that is providing 8Mb connection speed and you don't have download limit issues, why are you using a separate router and account in the first place?

I am not suggesting that you mix your personal phone bill with your internet usage. However, as I said, routers do not store information about your use of the internet. As long as you are not exceeding download limits there is not the same need to separate your business and personal internet usage.

This, of course, does not apply if you are speaking of connecting to a business network with its own server. But from what I gather these are just 2 different ISP accounts.

Please allow me to ask again what your costs are in comparison to the two packages, there is no need to quote exact figures.

Believe it or not you can have 2 lines in your house, both on ADSL, and have different theoretical maximum line speeds. Seems crackers, but apparently older cables/ newer cables can take a different route to the exchange, and also be made from different quality wires - that what the engineers say anyway.

Your router is not normally the issue, but if you are a long way from the exchange, some routers peform better than others.

That said, if you have a neighbour that is getting almost full speed then I doubt the line length is the problem.

Are both contracts for ADSL Max, or is the slower one on a fixed rate line - it may pay to check with your ISP.

It would be useful if you could let us know a bit more info about the packages you have.

Also, have a look at the BT speed checker - it gives provisional figures for your line rate - compare both your lines.

BT Broadband

BT won't touch an ADSL line complaint unless they are your ISP - any issue has to be raised through your ADSL provider, they run a few checks, and if they agree they will pass you to second level support.
