Completely ignorant re network setup

Recommended Posts

Have two computers (physically side by side) on cable. One new Vista which

I assume is the "master" if there is such a thing.

Other is running Win98se. SE has "Davidcom 9102 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter"

which is connecting to the router (linksys wireless-G). It is wireless as

there is another SE computer "upstairs" to be connected sometime? SE also

has "Dial up adapter" that is X'ed off and "Existing Ndis2 Driver" that is

"!'ed.

Would like to be able to share/transfer files between the Vista and SE

machines.

Both computers work fine on the internet! However I have been leaving the

SE machine disconnected from the router as it does not presently have any

antivirus protection.

Also have a MyBook external drive that I can switch between cpus by

switching plugs on the external drive.

Question is how do I set up to share files etc? Have never had any

experience with networking!!!

Any help will be greatly appreciated. The response to other queries has

been great!

Gary

Re: Completely ignorant some progress

Re: Completely ignorant some progress

Sorry if I goofed up by not checking the network group but did not realize

it existed.

Probably should have started this in the network group!

Found a thread there that got me half way! Can access the Win98 from the

Vista

but not the Vista from the Win 98. They both appear in their respective

network windows.

When I boot, after the initial request for user name, password, and domain I

get the following message:

No domain server was available to validate your password.

you may not be able to gain access to some network

Also when I try to access the Vista machine from the Win98 I get:

\\Gary-PC\CVista is not accessible

access denied

Gary-PC and CVista are correct

Wonder what I missed?

Should I continue this thread or switch over to the network group?

Thanks for any suggestions

Gary

Re: Completely ignorant some progress

Good luck getting the Win98 system to access the Vista system. It can be done, but

with varying degrees of success.
