Theoretical solution : How to mark / unmark forum threads as read?

So you made a forum... say, we have TABLE1 where all the threads are. We got TABLEuser for users and we got TABLElink for nested threads/replies...

 

How would you build the read|unread solution?

 

Would you create a new table to keep track of read|unread threads for each user? would you use cookies? any other way?

 

What's the best solution for this in your opinion?
