I have searched other threads and not found a solution to my problem.

I did try Article ID 817900 from Microsoft Help an support - did ll three methods and the Fix IT for ME none of which corrected the problem.

Here is what 's happened: I connect from the port of my Brother PR600 embroidery machine to my laptop via USB on any of the four ports on the Toshiba Satellite A105

Usually when plugged in a bing sounds denoting new hardware found and a window appears at the task bar on bottom of screen stating a removable disk E is available.

Nothing on Device Manager shows a problem -shows device working properly. and in Device Manager under Disk Drives the Brother USB Ram ZDisk USB Device Properties shows Device type as Disk Drive Mfg Std dis drive and location 0.

and under the driver tab shows Microsoft date 7-1-2001 Version 5.1.2535.0 Digital Microsoft Windows Publisher Signer

and when tried searching for Hardware update the wizard says cannot continue - could not find a better match for your hardware than you have currently installed and there is no Rollback Driver .

This device worked on the laptop until yesterday and works fine on my desktop computer. Any suggestions how to resolve?

Thanks, BB

Hi Blair hope you don't mind but I edited your post to make it a little easier to Read and understand :)

Did anything happen yesterday just before it stopped working, any software/Antivirus Updates or did you install any new software?

USB problems reply

Nothing that I am aware of - I did a check for errors with Registry First Aid on Tuesday night because I kept getting kicked off the internet so thought that might help it did not still getting kicked off today. I have tried to do a system restore today but after selecting a prior date (Feb 24,09) and during the restoration System Restore is supposed to shut down windows and after it is complete Windows restarts using the settings from the date and time but the Confirm Retore Point Selection screen never goes away. I am at my wits end - don't know what to o. Thanks, BB

what Antivirus software are you using, and have you tried updating and doing a full scan?

and may I suggest downloading Malwarebytes.org and using it to scan your system.

I think we should rule out software problems before we start looking at component failure, and as you are having problems doing a system restore I am tending to think you have a Virus infection. that is preventing it.

I totally agree with Match. I always do.

You have System Restore problems and you were probably looking everywhere for a fix of problems that you thought may or may not be related to your original problem.

On another note:

Reg cleaners usually only make things worse to the point of not being able to do anything until you reinstall Windows.

I noticed you tried Registry First Aid Did it actually fix any items or did it just scan?

Either way you should follow Match's advice on this as he knows what he is doing.

USB problems

Thanks Match and RandyL,

Yes, RandyL, Registery First Aid scanned and also fixed. But I couldn't get the computer to stay on (kept freezing up) long enough to run the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool April 2009 (would scan for over 2 hrs then stop and I had to power off due to freeze) I tried that 3 times. Kept getting popup from System Security Firewall Alert that Internet Explorer Internet Browser infected with worm, Lsas.Blaster.Keyloger - trying to send credit card details to a remote host via Internet Browser Internet Explorer but my antivirus software -AVG- kept blocking.

So I tried to run thru Windows Live the One Care Safety Scanner - it too stopped after running over 3 hrs and computer was again frozen. Then I called 1-866-PC Safety and the tech walked me thru the steps to take off the virus/trojans whatever and now computer is running fine.

However, the tech could not help me with the USB issue - and it still does not work. I thought it might after restarting computer since the virus issue had been resolved, but they do not work. Still get the ping sound Found New Hardware can't get the Add Hardware Wizard to add as Plug and Play and Device Manager shows under Toshiba that the Disk Drive Brother USB Ram Disk USB Device is working properly.

So I am wondering if the drives are faulty - but could all for be?

I tried to contact someone at the Toshiba forum yesterday for help but haven't received a reply.

Any other suggestions? Thanks, Beverly

As maynardvdm says try uninstalling the ports from device manager. Particulary anyhing that says something along the lines of Universal Serial Bus Controllers or Host Controllers. Then reboot as he said.

However I have to reiterate that once a reg cleaner is used all hope may be lost as those are usually bogus programs and even those that are not can do harm beyond repair unless you know exactly what you are doing. Often times a reinstall of Windows is the only way to undo the damage.

Backup all your files just in case then proceed is my opinion.

Thanks, RandyL. I have done the Registry First Aid before with no problems but guess the worm might have had something to do with my problem this time. However, I am going to try to uninstall al the USB ports again and reboot and see/pray that helps to correct. Thank you, BB

USB won't work

No, still no working USB ports I tried a cruzer micro 1.0 GB by SanDisk which I have embroidery files stored and have used previously but when it is plugged into any of the (4) USB ports after trying the suggested uninstall, restart to allow windows to reinstall - which it did or appears to have done- shows new hardware found at MY Computer under Devices with removable storage as "U3 System (f:) but it will not open to show any files.

Nor does the U3 icon appear in the taskbar and when I try to run the launchU3.exe nothing happens, however, all the files appear when I open or explore the U3. SO I don't understand if the USB port recognizes why I can't get it to work.

Under Start, control panel, system ,Toshiba,Disk Drivers, Scan Disk U3 Cruzer Micro USB Device when right click to update driver (no better match found) when scan for hardware changes - goes back to Scan Disk U3 Cruzer Micro USB Device and when going into the troubleshooting I don 't know what Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) means.

Not sure if the is important or not but under Device Manager there was MTP Device and I don't know what that is either but it is no longer there.

Still trying to get these to work, getting no help from Toshiba nor Microsoft and don't know what caused the problem. But I tried a System Restor again last night and it never completed so I closed/cancelled this morning after waiting all night.

Hi blair,

A couple of things come to mind, they may not be related, but bear with me.

System Restore - just reading the whole thread, you've had some bugs on your computer, and traces of those could well be held in your System Restore points. Any successful use of System Restore could infect your PC again.

Did Microsoft run a full disinfection of your PC, or just remove the bug that was causing you problems?

I think perhaps if they just cleaned one or two infections, a full clean up is needed. That way we can be sure your system software is ok.

This is how to do it - if MS did a full clean, disregard the following, except Step 5.

Please disable your resident security applications (such as AVG, Spybot, WinPatrol, etc.) before performing the below procedure so that they do not interfere with the process.

Perform all the steps in the order listed to avoid any conflicts.

If unsure, please stop and voice your doubts.

You might be required to go offline during the disinfection process. Therefore, it is recommended to print off the instructions below for ease of reference.

If you stick to the above guidelines, all should go smoothly.

================================================

STEP 1

  1. Download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune.
  2. Save the file to your Desktop.
  3. Double-click on the file to run the program.
  4. On the Main tab, check the Select All button.
  5. Next, click on the Firefox tab (if applicable) and check the Select All button.

Note: If you would like to preserve your saved passwords in Firefox, then click No at the corresponding prompt.

  6. Now, click on the Opera tab (if applicable) and check the Select All button.

Note: If you would like to preserve your saved passwords in Opera, then click No at the corresponding prompt.

  7. Press the Empty Selected button and click OK to acknowledge the corresponding prompt.
  8. Click on the Exit button to quit the program.

================================================

STEP 2

  1. Please click here to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  2. Save the file to your Desktop.
  3. Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  4. At the end, make sure a check mark is placed next to:

    1. Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    2. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

[*]Click Finish.

[*]The program will download and update itself if it finds the necessity to do so. Please allow this.

[*]Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.

Note: Depending on your computer specifications, the scan may take some time to complete. Please wait patiently and do not interrupt the process.

[*]When the scan is complete, click OK, and then Show Results to view the results.

[*]Make sure that every entry is selected, and click Remove Selected.

[*]Restart your computer.

================================================

STEP 3

  1. Please click here to download SUPERAntiSpyware (Free Version).
  2. Save the file to your Desktop.
  3. Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  4. Open SUPERAntiSpyware.
  5. Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
  6. Click the Scanning Control tab.
  7. Under Scanner Options make sure the following fields checked:

[*]Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.

[*]On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.

[*]On the left, make sure you check mark All the Fixed Drives.

[*]On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.

[*]Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.

[*]After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click OK.

[*]Make sure every entry has a check mark next to it and click Next.

[*]A notification will appear that Quarantine and Removal is Complete. Click OK and then Finish to return to the main menu.

    [*]Restart your computer.

    ================================================

    STEP 4

    1. Please visit the ESET Online Scanner, using Internet Explorer to initiate the scan.

Note: If you are running Windows Vista, then you will need Administrative privileges to complete the latter part of the procedure. To do so, right-click on the Internet Explorer icon in the Start Menu and select the Run As Administrator option in the shell context menu.

    2. Check mark the YES, I accept the Terms of Use box.
    3. Click the Start button.
    4. Click the Install button on the following screen.
    5. Click Start. This will will initialize and update the scanner engine.
    6. Check mark the box beside Remove found threats.
    7. Click the Scan button. This will start the scan. Please be patient while it is in progress.
    8. Restart your computer.

    ================================================

    STEP 5

    1. Click on Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and select System Restore.
    2. Choose the radio button marked Create a Restore Point on the first screen and click Next. Give the restore point a name then click Create. The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a note of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
    3. Next, click on Start > Run, type Cleanmgr and click on OK.
    4. Click on the More Options tab.
    5. Click the Clean Up button in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the most recent one.

This will remove any infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in "System Restore" are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only foolproof way to ensure the deletion of those files.

Note: Do not clear restore points on a regular basis as doing so will clear all previous restore points even those that you may need. System Restore is a useful tool to revert your computer back to a working condition if something goes wrong.

    Re-enable all your security applications

Close browsers before scanning

Does the set up for Malwarebytes take a long time, I followed Scott's instructions and when I get to #3 in Step 2 it seems to not be doing anything?

Thanks, I have searched and couldn't find it - this is getting to be a real "job".

What cant you find? On that link just click on 1311: How to disable AVG Free temporarily.

No it does not take too long, depending on your connection the update may take a minute or so.

Sorry, I had searched but found with your post to 1311, and after I downloaded from Step 2 #3 the double clicked it too over 24 minutes and nothing happened so I closed and went to bed - going to start again today I will advise. Thanks, BB

If you still struggle with that step try it is safe mode.

Start your computer in Safe Mode.

  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again. If F8 doesn't work try F5.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Log on with an account that has administrator priviledges, usually your own account (NOT the account named Administrator).

Okay, I downloaded it , showed

At the end, make sure a check mark is placed next to:

  1. Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  2. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware created a shortcut on the desktop

and they were both checked, so I clicked Finish. A shortcut was created on the desktop but nothing ever came up for me to select Perform Full scan.

SO, went to Malwarebytes Support , searched thru FAQ, renamed tried to open from shortcut, nothing happened, tried to go thru programs files folder for the Malware software, could not open, put in a request #7869 awaiting answer.
