Guest Rocky T Squirrel Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Howdy, puter reports that my setupx.dll is not right, so I did the replacement thing from a new copy of the same dll file.. however after a couple of sessions on the web the puter says again that the same file setupx.dll is not right again.. Now I've scanned the puter with everything I got and then some and it says there isn't any virus or malware to be found.. (avast, adaware, housecall, etc..) did a full disk scan for possible bad sectors non found.. (80geg took 6.5 hours) So, I'm open for suggestions as to what the problem might be.. as a side note, every time i try to access the microsoft update site i get a crash notice of mshtml.dll has closed iexplorer. doesn't do it on any other website only microsoft.. tks RTS (ME was old and faithfull not so sure anymore)
Guest webster72n Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Re: question setupx.dll See if this will give you some relief, you may have to 'reinvent' your 'setupx.dll' file: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917425. Guest Rocky T Squirrel Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Re: question setupx.dll tks for the effort webster72n their's something really messed up here somewhere.. I'm now getting errors and failures from an assortment of files, mmtask, mmsystem, mshtml, msgsrv32, as well as setupx. What I've done so far is replace each of those files one at a time from a virgin copy of ME and each time the troubled puter seems to work right the first reboot but then starts rejecting the same files after a few minutes.. I can't get into safe mode at all now.. everything has to be done with the boot disk.. the puter will NOT restore to an earlier date, restore message is that restore was unsucessful each time. tks for the effort.. If so, then try a scandisk c: using your floppy boot disk. You need to eliminate a possible failing HDD. DO NOT do a Surface Scan until/unless you've backed-up your essential (personal) data. Make a note of any/all error reports before considering or proceeding with a Surface Scan. Good luck. Guest RockyTSquirrel Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Re: question setupx.dll tks mart about restore tried using the windows portal with no luck (had several months of points) then tried using the start floppy (only had 5 points but none would work) FYI I've given up trying to figure it out.. I've reinstalled ME on another drive and currently setting it up with the basics will try copy and paste from the bad drive to the newer one and see if the problem follows over.. That will let me know if its an unknown virus or what.. from all test so farthe old hard drive is not failing, no bad sectors or lost data reported.. Tks again. Guest RockyTSquirrel Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Re: question setupx.dll tks webster72n its a mute problem now, i've gone 75 percent over to a new install.. the new setup has cleared out a lot of oddities from the old drive.. (the old drive had been in operation for well over 5 years without a reload..) I now have smooth sound drive output on startup also time to start is about 1/3 the old one.. Just getting all the old data and even older programs back on the puter takes some time.. once i get the new drive fully up to speed, i'll do a manual sweep of the old drive deleting everything with dll, exe, com, and any other operating sufix... I did find however that the old image handler program i had been using for 7 years would not pass an email virus scan.. ( firehand.com MAX) Avast kept saying it was a questionable virus type program.. kinda odd that, cause it had been working normally as best as i could notice.. Since Firehand has gone out of business it could be the reason... LOL tks again. The error message was generic and the MS KB didn't help. But I found a shareware utility called "WinRescueXP" that was able to read and restore the Win XP created restore point that Win XP itself refused to restore. I was able to do this well within the free trial period. There is also a WinRescueME for Win ME that you might try if you ever have this problem again. See: http://regvac.com/rescuexp.htm .
