Guest Dapper Dan Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 Have this nagging problem in the last month or so where Laptop Me freezes after popup window from Avast notifying detail changes. To be clear, the freeze does not occur with any update. A notification box appears in lower left screen advising of update saying "click here to review update". If I don't click on it, it will disappear in about 5-10 seconds and nothing happens. If and when I click on it, it details the changes but it then freezes when I try to close it. I can run a virus scan without problems but when I go to close the "results" window, it also freezes. Thinking it may have been a corrupt file, I uninstalled and reinstalled Avast but the problem persists. It's not a serious inconvenience as I intend replacing the laptop in the next couple of weeks but it is an irritant. Just as importantly, the resolution would be educational to me. Any ideas. Dan

Of course, when I click on it, it follows through. Do you recall what you did just before this happened and do you have a system checkpoint for this point in time available? If so, why not try that? Guest Heirloom Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 Re: computer freezes DD, If you can, try right clicking the Avast! program icon in the Systray and from the menu, hover your pointer over Updating and choose program, let it do its' thing. If that fails to resolve the issue, download a fresh copy of Avast!, delete your old and reinstall. Be sure to run the updater and get the latest defs after install. Let us know if that does the trick. Guest Heirloom Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 Re: computer freezes I wish there were a way to delete a response......I see now that you have already attempted the un/reinstall....my bad. The only other thing I can think of....are you using Zone Alarm?? If so, go to the Programs tab and remove all instances of Avast! and its' updaters, etc. Then uninstall Avast! again and be sure to delete the contents of your Temp folder, then reinstall Avast! again. You will have to put up with ZA popups for a bit, but, no biggie and once again, be sure to run Avast! updater. I am thinking your other program update may have gone bad and you still have the ZA program entries allowing or blocking the Avast! update processes or something corrupt in the Temp folder for the update. As always, I could be way off base here, but, on a good note, nothing I have suggested can damage anything :-) Heirloom, old and merry CHRISTMAS to all!! (yes, I said 'Christmas', because it IS Christmas and Santa says 'HO HO HO'! If you are in the <10% offended by this, I'm not sorry. I say you can wish me a happy whatever you celebrate and I will thank you. If 'HO HO HO' offends you, I say learn to use the real word....wh*re....and you won't be offended anymore and you will no longer have problems in the Lawn and Garden department when asking for an implement to chop and turn soil). Oh yeah, and Happy New Year...even if you are on another calendar. You can wish me your 'Happy Year of the Swamp Rat', or whatever your preference when the timing is correct and I will thank you....I won't be offended) <stepping down from soapbox now> "Heirloom" <nobodyhome@noplacelike.hom> wrote in message news:%23FxQcOrOIHA.5860@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... > DD, > If you can, try right clicking the Avast! program icon in the > Systray and from the menu, hover your pointer over Updating and choose > program, let it do its' thing. Guest Dapper Dan Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 Re: computer freezes Thanks for your input Harry, but evidently this problem has been on going for about a month although I only found out a couple of days ago (it's my wife's computer). In other words, I don't have a checkpoint to go back to. BTW, I erred in saying lower left screen....I should have said lower right screen! Thanks for your advice too 'Loom. A long time ago, I replaced Zone Alarm with Kerio 2.1.5, so it's not that. Don't know why it happens with just Avast; I'll try and experiment with it but dearly beloved hates it when I start playing with her laptop!!! Don't know if you are a football fan but I watched New England thump "the guarantee" today. Looks like Dallas won a close one in Detroit. Don't fall off that soap box 'Loom, it looks like it's a long way down. Thanks for the Christmas greetings, I don't think anyone in this NG would be offended unless............. Guest Heather Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 Re: computer freezes Loon, you are hilarious!! And SO right!! It isn't just happening in the States.....up here too. Last year they renamed the CHRISTMAS TREE at the Toronto City Hall to the "holiday tree".....which I refuse to call it. As you said, it is CHRISTmas and if non-Christians don't like it, then just turn around and go back to where you came from. It seems to be just the immigrants from the last 20 years or so that do all the bitchin'. Merry Christmas to you too!!
