Laptop UNC nightmare

Hi All

Our school has 4 identical Fujitsu laptops running WinXP Pro SP2 / NTFS file

sys, but I cannot get one of them to see our server via UNC.

This laptop:

a) can get to the internet

b) gets it's tcp/ip details from the server's dhcp server correctly

c) does not have the firewall on

d) has no internet security software installed such as Norton

e) can ping the server

f) the tcp/ip main window tick boxes, eg file&print sharing, are all ticked.

but if I do \\servername\ it says it can't find the path found - whaaattt??

The other 3 laptops just found it and I could carry on copying files in

seconds. By the way, this server is a Win2k3 server so it isn't a

connections issue and my task is to get the data off the laptop onto the

server and then add it to the domain.

What on earth could be stopping me getting to the server through UNC?

Thanks

Hello Laphan,

Please post an ipconfig /all from the machine. Do you have added an external

DNS server to NIC seetings? DNS configuration should only be internal to

work correctly. Or is the computer multihomed (more then one configured NIC)?

Best regards

I find that sometimes, and I just demonstrated this to myself again today

with a Server install, Windows systems cannot see other Windows systems on

the same network if IPX/SPX is not installed. Go to Network Connections,

right-click the adapter and choose Properties, then Add, Protocol, IPX/SPX.

The server I'd just installed could see every system on the network *except*

for this XP Pro thinkpad that I'm writing on, and it couldn't find it by any

means including UNC. That changed the instant I installed IPX/SPX on the

server's network adapter.

Ouch. I don't recommend this. If you're having problems with networking,

adding additional protocols to the stack is not the answer!

No, that's absolutely not necessary.
