DSTM Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Read this article, from Rick Broida of PC World. Wondering what you Guys think, of what he said. Personally,I wouldn't be without Security Programs.:) Security Software: Protection or Extortion? - Business Center - PC World Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
RandyL Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 I think he should be fired for even suggesting such a thing in todays world. Read page 2 of the article for an opposing view from Robert Vamosi. DSTM Posted April 15, 2009 Author Posted April 15, 2009 Agree with you there,Randy. He should be fired. My thoughts were, "Is this Guy for real" Lowers PC Worlds credibility, allowing such garbage, to be printed.IMO. Some Newby may even take his advice, that's the worrying part. maynardvdm Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 He says he is not using any security software, yet he uses firewalls and Windows Defender. What are those then? So in a way he is using security software. Good one Doug ;) Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. Goku Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Well he takes support from security programs too so he can't say he is completely independent of them. What he fails to mention is that he is free from infections without the use of security suites is his clean browsing habits and exercising common sense. I don't know about him but I would definitely be fired from the Malware University if I were to repeat that, lol. :D Besides, there are plenty of free alternatives available that oppose this "scam". So his opinions are quite baseless. What he is doing to prove his point is using the "Prevention is better than cure" theory, I say give him an infection and lets see how he deals with it. :D -- Goku Quote
Tootech Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 There's alot of sense in what he says - be aware, don't open junk mail with attachments, don't surf dodgy sites, use an antiphishing filter. He's not exactly your average surfer though is he. As for using Windows Defender - got to ask - why bother, it doesn't seem to stop anything worthy of mention. For most of us that 'use' the Internet as part of life, buying goods, surfing ebay, and checking bank balances, security is essential - it does the job of Mr Rick Broida himself. No doubt one day we'll see him in the news, rather embarrased that he has had his bank acccount emptied by a smart hacker. Anyone remember Jeremy Clarkson having a rant and getting stung? RandyL Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 I knew that everyone here would agree. You all know the issues go beyond safe habits. Although I do have one computer running unprotected. It's not hooked up to the internet and only my disks go in the tray. Although someday I really must clear out the remnants of the AOL infection. And AOL was on it when I got it. I didn't do it. Match Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Well after reading that, now I have stopped laughing. In my opinion Rick Broida should consider joining a monastery and running for pope, I don't visit Web sites that peddle gambling, porn, torrents, or "warez." (Yeah, I know, I'm boring.) Boring!! not normal mate you need help get a life My first line of defense is my router. Like most, it has a built-in firewallThe second line of defense is Windows. XP, Vista, and 7 have built-in firewallsMy secret weapon: GmailFirefox and Internet Explorer offer robust antiphishing tools. Both will sound the alarm if I attempt to visit sites known to be fraudulentI'm comfortable leaving my PC in the capable hands of Windows Defenderyea right so you don't use Security software, sure you mean your a naive fool, and don't use third party security software. and after all is said and done I have a processor running a 3Ghz, 4gig RAM and pc tools internet security registered free for 12 months, a) It don't slow my system down so that I notice or bothers me b) It's Free anyway. c) I think Rick Broida's a CENSORED Quote
Plastic Nev Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 Robert Vamosi, on the second page, has it about right. I agree with most comments about Rick Broida, but he isn't that daft. He is a more than competent person, knows the risks and as he states, but in other words, doesn't take the risks. Fine, if he wants to live like that, let him carry on. It is folk with little computer knowledge, and niave about the security risks and dangers out on the web, who do need to be informed about, and use the best security available, and be advised to use it. For me, I stick with the free stuff, because I also stay away from the high risks, and yes I am boring too, but I am free of malware and intend staying that way.
