Does Christmas come earlier in S. Wales than the rest of the world? <vbg>

Nevertheless a very merry and happy Christmas to all those reading this

I was going to wait a week (or two), but now there's no choice but "joining

the choir", in answer to you, H and Joanie and all in this group:

Thank you and

"Have Yourself a Very Merry Christmas" (the old-fashioned way)

and a

"Jolly New Year"!

That's 'Old Bing Crosby's' favorite (oops, forgot the 'u') song also.

It is a quiet weekend and I have been researching a problematic Windows Update, KB942615,

which is crashing IE under Windows XP so I have been on Usenet doing research this weekend.

Also I have been doing some research concerning Smart Card cryptographic Services and PKI on

Vista.

As the winter comes into play, I hope to be spending more time in Usenet space.

BTW: Feliz Navidad is spanish for Merry Christmas.

I've had IE browser problems running both IE6 SP2 and IE7 on XP following

the installation of 942615. Problem seems to be related to rendering page

content and how complicated it is. For example I've crashed IE6 by

viewing KB942615 (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=942615) which is a

pretty big page with an enormous file spec section.

I understand MS to be actively tracking these problems.

Hi Mike:

So far the registry mod. pointed to in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942367 has been

indicated the relieve the problem. So far on my home PC it seems to work but it needs to be

tested on a broader set of platforms.

I've seen the suggestions in 942367 reported as sometimes fixing the

problem but am unclear as to whether the reg mod is also supposed to help

those experiencing problem with IE7. Personally I haven't bothered with

the reg edit nor have I uninstalled 942615 which also seems to fixes the

problem. I haven't been inconvenienced that much and knowing that the

problem is being looked at is enough for me. I've virtually withdrawn

from all MS newsgroups and testing which goes a long way to helping keep

my blood pressure from going through the roof.

I hope you are keeping well and manage to get a few days break next week.

I'll finish off by wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and

leave it you to "translate" that into something appropriate to yourself.

Re: Merry Christmas

OJ,

Thanks for those kind words, the Win Me NGs are now the only Microsoft

newsgroups I look at regularly and I hope to continue to be able to do so

in the new year. However I've lost all enthusiasm for testing, in part

due to most feedback falling on deaf ears, and can't find any personal

enthusiasm for Vista. As for Windows Live This and Windows Live That I

feel that Microsoft has lost the plot whilst at the same time confusing

their customers, for example, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail, Windows

Live Mail Desktop, etc.. As for Windows One Care (or rather Windows We

Don't Care about your preferences) I rank this amongst the worst of kind

along with most products from Symantec.

Here's wishing you a merry Christmas and a New Year that brings you

everything you want for yourself.

If you have; C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB942615$

You have it installed and was pushed pushed this past Patch Tuesday.

Odd, I looked with Belarc and that update does not appear on my machine. I

am set for 'auto' updates, however, I screen them before installation. This

doesn't look like one I would have rejected. Mike, would it be best to wait

for the next offering? I looked at the reasons for installation and I am

not experiencing any of the items this was intended to fix. I do have 6ea.

KB94XXXX installs, 5 of which are dated 12/12/07, but, 942615 is not amongst

them.

Another question, is there any reason to keep the "blue" uninstall files,

i.e. $NtUninstallKBXXXXX$...?? I have them all the way back to 2005!!! I

would think anything more than a month or so old could be dumped. (I have

tons of space and just never bothered to get rid of them, plus, I wasn't

sure if I should <g>)

Dave or Mike or anyone.....

Is there any reason to keep the older $NtUninstallKBxxxxx$ files? What

is a good 'rule of thumb' to keep them around? i.e. a month, two months,

just long enough to see if there is a problem?

Heirloom, old and don't have that one
