I have a toshiba A40 laptop that is running Windows XP Home Edition 2002 with service pack 3. Apart from being very slow it has now started turning itself off. The machine is very noisy, which I assume is the fan and this seems to be running all of the time. The activity that often causes this problem is watching tv using one of the iplayers. It is now happening more often and not always when watching tv. Sometimes I have not even connected to the internet and it happens. The pc may have been running for hours before it turns itself off or it can happen after just a few minutes. Every time it has happened the noise/fan has been running at a very fast rate. There are no warning messages that come up it just turns off. Is all of this down to memory or do I have 2 problems that need to be sorted?

Hi Pam sounds to me that if you are right about the noise being fan related you have a Heat problem,

do you know how to open the case and check for dust, and if need be replace the fan?

the other thing to consider is that running a PC that is overheating can cause permanent damage to components.

No I'm afraid not. I have not opened the case on my laptop at all so I have no idea where to start.

I'd advise that you do not attempt to open the case whatsoever Pam as any errors could result in a totally non working laptop.

On this occasion it would be better for you to take it to a reputable repair centre to have it checked over but preferably not PC World in my opinion.

Thank you for your replies. There are several pc repairers listed in my local paper. Is there any way of checking out who might be best to use or anything sprecific to ask them to check this out?

First of all I would ask your friends if they have dealt with anyone, next would be to ask a given shop for customer testimonials as to their customer support.
