Sound channel initialization

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Sometimes when I connect to windows XP through remote desktop Windows Media

player doesn't play audio. It complains about 'no suitable audio devices

found'. Majority of the times audio works great but some cases we get into

this situation. What suprises us is that disconnect and reconnect to the

same session which was playing audio just fine previously can get into this

problem. It is as though Terminal services doesn't initialize sound channel

during RDP connect.

Does terminal services determine not to load audio drivers in a session

based on some resource utilization? Does anyone have any info/pointers to

guide us in troubleshooting this issue?

Thanks in advance,

Konda

RE: Sound channel initialization

Hi Konda,

I think that audio redirection is reinitialized every new logon (read

‘logon’: no ‘reconnect’ which you use with a disconnected session).

Sorry what I say above is not correct. The client also reinitialize by a

disconnected session.

The only think I can think of: are you 100% sure the client settings are set

in the correct way? (The RDP Client sound options: ‘bring to this computer’.)

If so, make a .RDP file with the correct settings.

My experience with sometimes it works and sometimes not are mostly related

to client settings.

Hope this helps.

Re: Sound channel initialization

Hi Bas,

Thanks for the reply. In our case client settings are set the right

way(actually they are never changed across logins, connects) but audio works

in one login but not the later. It is not 100% reproducible which makes it

hard to investigate.

Are there any known scenarios in which terminal services decides to not

initialize the audio channel during RDP connect?

Thanks,

Konda

Re: Sound channel initialization

Hi Konda,

It is indeed very difficult to investigate. I’m not aware of known issue’s.

Maybe somebody else stand up and speak…

PS, do you connect to Windows XP or Windows 2003 server?

If it is Windows 2003 server. Are you using load balancing or just one

terminal server?

All the best,

Bas H.
