Guest Masitpro_mcse Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 Have my ntbackup jobs configured to run twice a day to backup exchange database files and server system state data. Get an error message in the event log: NTBackup error: 'The operation failed. Consult the Backup Report for more details.' Checked the backup log report and it states as follows: Backup Status The operation was not performed because the specified media cannot be found. What concerns me is I know the scheduled task and backup job is configured properly because when I select and run the scheduled task job from the control panel manually (clicking on it to run), it goes smoothly without a hitch. What is up with that? Help me fix this bug before it jumps up and bites me! -- Mark Anthony MCSE 2003

What is up with that? Help me fix this bug > before it jumps up and bites me! What kind of media are you using? How did you schedule the task? Are you using the /um switch? NB: As NTBackup & RSM have to be among the worst-documented components of Windows, you might find that the little wrapper application called BackupAssist helps you to make better use of it. If I don't use that, or third party software, I use NTBackup via a batch file with all sorts of goodies in it (label tape the way I want, eject tape after backup, email logs, etc) - but if you don't have such scripts BackupAssist may become your best friend. http://www.backupassist.com/index.html - it's quite affordable, and there's a free trial, I believe. I don't work for the company or have any affiliation other than liking their stuff.
Guest Masitpro_mcse Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 Re: NT Backup running on Scheduled Tasks Wench, Using the backup file to disk method with the bkf extension. Do not know what you mean how did I schedule task, just the usual way you schedule tasks by opening it and creating one. Checked my command line in scheduled task properties below: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "@C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.MUS\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\mail-sys.bks" /n "mail-sysState.bkf created 6/12/2007 at 11:38 AM" /d "Set created 6/12/2007 at 11:38 AM" /v:no /r:no /rs:yes /hc:off /m copy /j "mail-sys" /l:s /f "Z:\mail-sysState.bkf" Maybe it will help you in troubleshooting the problem. The funny thing is I can run the backup job by right clicking the task and select Run. Why will it not run on its own is a mystery to me. Guest neo [mvp outlook] Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 Re: NT Backup running on Scheduled Tasks For what its worth and I hope I'm interpreting your post right, but you can't backup the system state and exchange in the same ntbackup job. You need two jobs (1 for exchange and 1 for the system state*). * Has something to do with VSS and that it interferes with Exchange 2003 backup API. Guest Masitpro_mcse Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 Re: NT Backup running on Scheduled Tasks If you are talking about MS #820272 then you are correct BUT if you have read further it is possible to backup both by moving the Exchange Server Database files to another volume; which I did move to my D:\ drive. It was suggested by MS #940032 to re-register VSS files but now I am getting a totally diferent event message and log error: Event ID: 20 Volume Shadow Copy Service error: A critical component required by the Volume Shadow Copy service is not registered. This might happened if an error occurred during Windows setup or during installation of a Shadow Copy provider. The error returned from CoCreateInstance on class with CLSID {faf53cc4-bd73-4e36-83f1-2b23f46e513e} and Name VSSEvent is [0x80040154]. Guest neo [mvp outlook] Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 Re: NT Backup running on Scheduled Tasks And I have to ask the silly question, but after you re-registered the vss files and rebooted, did you run: vssadmin list writers from a command prompt to ensure that they displayed w/out error? Guest Masitpro_mcse Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Re: NT Backup running on Scheduled Tasks Did some research and found I needed to reinstall COM+ component services also. So completed that and re-registered VSS files. Now NTbackup working fine now manually but getting following error message running in scheduled tasks: Backup Status The operation was not performed because the specified media cannot be found. Another roadblock equals more frustration added, thanks for hangin in for me. -- Mark Anthony MCSE 2003 "neo [mvp outlook]" wrote: > On my R2 EE box, it is listed as the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy > Provider. > > "Masitpro_mcse" <Masitpromcse@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:F0482078-DCBE-4336-8DE3-C885A6B8276D@microsoft.com... > > Do not seem to have the swprv service located, what is this service > > exactly? > > Let me know if I need it to solve the missing piece of the puzzle. > > -- > > Mark Anthony MCSE 2003 > > > > > > "neo [mvp outlook]" wrote: > > > >> Before I suggest calling MS PSS, I would try the re-register trick again. > >> Here are the steps I would go thru... > >> > >> > >> Net stop vss > >> Net stop swprv > >> regsvr32 ole32.dll > >> regsvr32 vss_ps.dll > >> Vssvc /Register > >> regsvr32 /i swprv.dll > >> regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll > >> regsvr32 es.dll > >> regsvr32 stdprov.dll > >> regsvr32 vssui.dll > >> regsvr32 msxml.dll > >> regsvr32 msxml3.dll > >> regsvr32 msxml4.dll > >> reboot > >> command prompt > >> vssadmin list writers > >> > >> > >> > >> "Masitpro_mcse" <Masitpromcse@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > >> news:8DA4ABFF-DD6F-4158-9C98-D3E094941CFE@microsoft.com... > >> > At this point no question is silly; Yes, ran vssadmin list writers at > >> > the > >> > command prompt and this is what it displayed: > >> > > >> > Microsoft Windows [Version 5.2.3790] > >> > © Copyright 1985-2003 Microsoft Corp. > >> > > >> > C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.MUS>vssadmin list writers > >> > vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line > >> > tool > >> > © Copyright 2001 Microsoft Corp. > >> > > >> > > >> > C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.MUS> > >> > > >> > It looks like there are no writers listed, could this be the problem? > >> > > >> > -- > >> > Mark Anthony MCSE 2003 > >> > > >> > > >> > "neo [mvp outlook]" wrote: > >> > > >> >> And I have to ask the silly question, but after you re-registered the > >> >> vss > >> >> files and rebooted, did you run: > >> >> > >> >> vssadmin list writers > >> >> > >> >> from a command prompt to ensure that they displayed w/out error? > >> >> > >> >> "Masitpro_mcse" <Masitpromcse@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in > >> >> message > >> >> news:8D5D4F94-A20C-4630-96DB-89DB51510C17@microsoft.com... > >> >> > If you are talking about MS #820272 then you are correct BUT if you > >> >> > have > >> >> > read > >> >> > further it is possible to backup both by moving the Exchange Server > >> >> > Database > >> >> > files to another volume; which I did move to my D:\ drive.
